put in some neons~

hello folks.. been a while since ive last posted here..
havent done much to the car but i put in two 10" tubes under the seats today
My Ride tell me what you think.. im very happy with it

also, can someone provide me with a wiring diagram for permanently wiring the neons instead of using the cigarette lighter plug? i have a giant awkward looking transformer in my car right now.. and im not very experienced with wiring and such but im pretty sure i could manage if i had a nice diagram and information as to where i "hook it up"

thanks in advance

well.. the thing is, i decided not to go the performace route.. besides maybe a nice exhaust system and rims (if thats considered performance). i just figured that its not gonna be that fast no matter how much money i put into it.. unless i put ALOT of money into it.. ya kno? not that im dissing our cars or anything, im very happy with it.. just sayin that if im going to spend money on it, i want it to be FAST. so ive decided to just fix it up cosmetically and put in a nice system. actually im getting infinity perfects next week.. with headunit and aftermarket speakers shortly after that. so yeah.. my point is.. all show and no go baby

read the instructions, read how much amps it must have. then you can cut the lighter plug off and it should tell you which wire is ground. then connect the ground wire to the body of the car (make sure you sand the metal not over any paint becasue it wont work well) then connect the + wire to your fuse box.

Here is how to wire it into the cigg lighter adapter...

first u need to get to the back of ur ciggerette lighter adapter, to do this...

follow This DIY until u have taken out the peice the cigg lighter is in.

then undo the thing with the 2 wires that plugs into ur cigg lighter.

now you have two wires. One yellow and one black i beleive.

the yellow is power, and the black is ground.

cut the ciggerette lighter adapter off of the neons, leave some room, cause if u end up not wiring it into the car, u can wire it back to the adapter :-D

there should be two wires comming form ur neon, one should have a stripe going down it somewhere, the one with the stripe is power.

u then want to either use wire tappers ( i get them from wallmart ).. 1 or strip the end of the 2 wires comming off the neons. 2 strip a little section of the 2 wires that plug into the back of the cigg lighter. 3 take the power wire from the neons ( one with a stripe ) and wrap it around the part u stripped from the yellow power wire on the back of the cigg light adapter. 4 do the same with the other wire from the neons and the black wire going to the cigg lighter. 5 use electrical tape and wrap it around where u have the wires touching.

Now whenever ur car is on, the neons will be on. that isnt good though, i would suggest wiring them to a switch. to do this, do everything the same, except wire the power wire of the neons to one prong of a switch ( u can get one from radio shack ) and run a wire from the other prong of the switch to the yellow power wire. then ground ur neons the same way as above, or ground them to any metal on the car. unless u have a switch with a light on it, u wont need to ground the switch.

hope that helps/works.

Hey Drew,

I installed my Neons about a month ago with a switch from Radio Shack with a light, and everything works fine but I can't get the light of the switch to turn on. Everytime I tried hooking it up I would blow the fuse, and I got tired of trying so I just stopped..

My Switch has 3 inputs, Power, Ground, and Line I believe and I obviously hooked up Power and Line but everytime I hooked up the ground it would blow up a fuse. Do you know what i'm doing wrong?

what did u ground the ground wire to?

the power, should be a wire u run from the power prong to whereer u are tapping power off of.

the line in should be the power wire of whatever u want to give power to.

and the ground should be a wire u run from the prong to metal on the car, or a ground wire of the car.

u do NOT ground ur neons to the ground on the switch, which may be what u were trying to do. however, if u ground ur switch, u can then run ur ground wire of the neon into the ground wire of the siwtch.

to test, just try getting the switch to work with nothing running to Line in. if that dont work let me know and ill draw a diagram, right now i jsut got off work and am too lazy

same here
i have 2 10" under the front and a 15" in the trunk.
i kept blowing the cig. fuse and was getting down to my last 2 or 3 replacement fuses i bought. iwas tryin to hook it to a switch and eventually gave up for the day. i just tapped all the neons to one cig adapter, got a stronger glass fuse, and ran all the wiring under the console. the cig adapter just sit in the little compartment under the socket. i unplug my radar detector and plug in the neons when im crusin' and dont have to worry about cops.

if anyone can draw up a diagram for the switch it would be most helpful to all of us

Some info for you guys trying to wire up neons. I have 2 recommendations for you guys. 1st Find a different 12V+ source other than tapping into you ciggarete lighter. That is designed for fairly low current draw, 1 neon MIGHT be okay, but I still recommend using a higher voltage/bigger wire. 2nd, its not a good idea to use your switch to supply the 12V+ to the neon. Switches are genereally designed to operate a relay. Switches, especially small ones are not made to supply the voltage. Check the ratings on your switches, if anyone needs a diagram to hook up neons, etc.. using a switch with a relay just let me know.

i have 2 neons wired to a switch wired to my ciggertee lighter, and no problems here, i can even plug my phone and radar detector into the cigg ligther witht he neons on and no problem whatsoever. i think if its made with a cigg lighter adapter, there shouldnt be a problem wiring it into it... but im no professional so could be wrong...
