What if GM and Ford merged?!
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dl...41/PROMOBLOG01
They're holding talks apparently, it might not happen, because afterall, they're just talks. I pose the question though, what if they merged? What vehicles would you like to see out of it and what would happen to their future products in general?
I hate to say this, but thier quality hasn't been rising as fast as Korean cars, so even if they do merge, they'd probably still have slower sales.

If they did merge it would force them both to cut unncessary cars from their lineups. GM has so many cars that fill the same niche as their other cars. Both Ford and GM need to trim their lineups. The Japanese car makers do it right. They have a bottom line and a luxury line, that share parts and chassis, making it cost effective. For example, most japanese car companies only have one "Truck" and nothing else in the line up competes with it. As compared to GM and Ford who have multiple lineups competing with each other. I am not saying they will be merged, but they definitely need to look at their lineups and start axing cars.
it wont happen... i work for a gm dealer here in florida. the big thing thats coming now is the fact that people are starting to notice more and more that ford and volvo are merged and that gm and toyota are merged. the question of will ford and gm merge.... it would hurt both business too much. they have such die hard people that swear by ford and swear by gm, it wouldnt happen.

i will kill myself the day that a chevy is associated with a crappy ford!!!! but i love, LOVe chevy1
and like robclark and dback said, it would hurt their bussiness too much because they both have vehicles that compeat against one another.

Am I reading this correctly? Is so no, GM and Toyota are not merge. They may be partners in some projects just like the Hydrogen cell partnership between GM, BMW and DCX.
To go back to the 1st question, if they were to merge (GM, Ford) they would cut a lot of line ups; as it was already stated. Not good for any of them.
actually they are merged.... do some research. i sit through the classes.... look in the new vibes .... tell me what motor is in that car?? also do some research on the ecotec.... tell me who makes that motor??
You gotta be as blind as Anne Frank not to see that

Ok... Yes the Vibes and Matrix are the same, assemble in NUMMI Plant. Before they would also make the Corrolla and Priz. That is a partnership, a joint venture between GM and Toyota in this case; not a "Merge".
Also Ecotec info:
"The Ecotec Family II is a modern chain-driven DOHC 4-valve design with an aluminum block and head (L850), designed for displacements from 1.8 to 2.4 L. It was developed by an international team of engineers and technicians from Opel's International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, GM Powertrain in Pontiac, Michigan, and Saab in Trollhättan, Sweden. ...
The current Ecotec line is manufactured in Tonawanda, New York, Kaiserslautern, Germany, and (for Saturn) in Spring Hill, Tennessee."

I know its extremely unlikely that they merge, but it'd be nice to see some of Ford Europe's cars with some GM tweaks, because I like how the SS moniker does things compared to the SVT line-up.
All their trucks would dissapear, which is bad... because thats what keeps them alive at the moment.

i just thought about something. so if GM and Ford merge, the only good thing that come out of that is the ultimate truck...f150 had always been rivals with the silverado, it would be sick if they merge.
hey my post will merge too..LOL.

So because it doesnt last as long and cost more than a Honda makes it ****? Actually if you take car of the vehilce it can last very long. My uncle had a 1995 Chevy 1500, lasted 300,000+ miles. Only reason he got rid of it was because he boss bough him a new truck.
And I cant say that I have seen any imports that produce a truck like GM and Ford, yah Toyota has the Titan, but wheres something to keep up with the Duramax, Powerstroke, and Cummins. Nothing. So couldnt that also make imports **** because they cant produce a deisel or something??? I mean that reason is almost as stupid as "they are more expensive and dont last as long"

The truck market is not what the imports are in. The imports are more for reliability and economic friendly. Why produce a truck if GM and Ford have the market wrapped up?

I had a 1989 Ford Econoline that went ~270,000 miles before we did anything major. It didn't need it, but we didn't want to get stranded so we replaced the engine. At 304,000 we lost a transmission seal which destroyed the torque converter. Fixed that and sold it at 315,000 miles. Great vehicle IMO.

American cars aren't as crappy as most of you stereotype them as.
My other ride is a 12 year old Jeep with 220,000+ miles thats runs stronger than the Civic and barely costs anything to own.
What sucks about domestic cars is that they seem to like to throw out as many cars as possible with disregard to pretty much everything except profit margin.
I understand that imports also share chassis and components to make 2 similar models but when is the last time you saw a Lexus ES and thought it was a Toyota Camry? Or even mistaked a Chrysler Pacifica for a Benz R class?
Domestics have a nasty reputation of making rebadged cars LOOK REBADGED.
And when they say Ford they are talking about the whole company which includes makers like Mazda to Volvo to Aston Martin.
GM has 99% domestic brands + Saab.
I would be more like Ford buying out GM.

well GM + Ford = Gord
GM+Ford- Mord
Ford+GM=Forg
Ford+GM=Form
I don't seen anything good no matter how you look at the math of it all

I do like my Acura...but same was for my Ford Ranger. Took care of them both..one reason they last.
You just can't base buying a car on brand (except for Hyundia of course, oh and Kia, and all that other garbage).
