are you trying to take it off by hand? if so, theres a tool you can get from your local auto parts store, it's an oil filter remover....it's got a grip handle and looks like a clamp that tightens up when you pull it

A) The oil filter remover tool (but where the hell can you get one right now?)

B) Take an old leather belt, wrap it around the filter and use it to help you twist off the filter by hand.

C) Stab a screwdriver and turn!

truth, go for the belt, or else stab and screw with some sharp object, its not like u r gonna need the filter afterwards.

Channel Lock pliers may grip it enough.

Screw driver method is the easiest, but messiest. Be prepared for some oil in the filter to drain out.

How long has it been since her last oil change?? Maybe spray some WD40 or silicone and see if you can get it to draw into the threads, same concept as an old nut/bolt that is stuck?? I don't know if there are any seals on the engine itself that this sort of thing would hurt tho. Also, check manual/internet and make sure toyota didn't do anything wierd like thread it backwards so you have to right instead of left.

I have a similar method, but I use a length of rope coiled around the filter.

if it is a factory toyota filter (black with toyota or lexus symbols and a lot of japanese writing) installed at the dealer forget it you're not gonna get it off w/o a GOOD filter wrench...I dunno how they put it on but they are put on tight when you get the oil changed from the dealer...screwdriver will only tear the factory filter up.and the belt thing ain't gonna cut it in the torque department....

if the filter is on real tight, a belt type oil filter remover might not do anything but crushing the oil filter housing, which was what happened on my dad's van. I would use a custom socket that fits the top of the celica oil filter and turn it with a wrench.
