ok, what does this do?.... INTAKE
it's called a pcv hose...it comes from teh positive crankcase ventilation valve located in the valve cover...it lets air flow out of the valve cover keeping fresher air in...this actually hurts performance of the car b/c it blows hot air back into the intake therefore increasing the temperature
you can get around this by installing a small filter on the pcv outlet from the valve cover and plug up the hole in the intake tube...this will let the crankcase ventilate and give you a little extra power

<< fyi you wont pass smog w/o that tube >>
what are you talking about? if he didn't have the hose there, he would still be sucking in the same amount of air as if he didn't have it... my suggestion is just to get the breather filters.. they sell it at any auto parts store...
you can take it off, it doesnt interfere with the pcv operation.... the gasses from the crankcase are sucked in below the throttle body. Usually the tube provides filtered fresh air into the valve cover area so that it can flow down the head, into the crankcase, and replace the air that is getting sucked into the intake manifold. Contrary to a post above, hot air is not going in and past the throttle body. Why people put breathers on this I dont understand, but it wont interfere with the pcv operation (unless the breather filter gets clogged)
all I was saying is if you go get smogged you better have that tube on there or Joe Q. Mechanic will say "gee garsh thats not there yew cannot pass dat test!"

I know alot of you guys live in Cali, but most people will pass the test with a breather on. For me, me and someone else made my intake. I don't have a hose there because it is a biotch to fabricate. So I am going to get a breather. By the way if you want a breather it is 15mm which might be kinda hard to get but you can get them from Procarparts

U can dislike them, but as for a breather they are one of the few companies that carry a 15mm. I don't know why Honda decided to go for a bigger PCV than normal (9mm) but they did.
because you may get the "by the book" tech who says "hmm thats not supposed to look like that" of course, make sure you have the carb-eo sticker on your intake OR AT LEAST somewhere under your hood when you smog it, you never know if you're getting a d#*k tech....

that sucks man, i always assumed that if the car didnt polute to a certain degree, it passed smog, no matter what. why should they care whtas under the hood or not?

In Cali you probably won't pass. Here on the East Coast we can pass usually. There is some bad air coming from the breather, but not much. Smog checks in cali are a biotch!

er.. okay guys, I haven't read a single post that seems to agree with what I know or think PVC and the hose does...
I'll make what I think is going on simple,
basically, excessive oil/vapor waste exits the PVC, and its run back into the throttle body and to the engine by that little hose... when you dont have the hose there to run it back into the throttle body, you're spilling out waste and thus you're not going to pass smog test due to CARB's regulation (california air regulation board). I'm not sure if this applie to other states though, probably not.
now when you throw a breather on... you're still not going to past smog, since the waste coming out will either clog up the breather, or start spilling outta it. I have no idea why people use the breather, since it doesn't make much sense.
actually, it does make sense. heh. in a way. since the waste does pass through the throttle body, in time, it builds up in it... hardcore performance dudes prefer to redirect the PVC so they can keep the throttle body clean. they use either homemade catch cans or ones you can buy... I think Greddy sells a catch can.. this basically redirects all the waste into a catch can which you can empty out later... makes more sense than just a breather, no?
well anyway thats what I think about it. which info you guys believe is up to you. I'll get a pic of the catch can in th engine bay if you guys want. *shrug*

YEah that is a good explanation CapYoda. When attached to the intake, it creates positive flow thus bringing up some oil into the crankcase which really doesn't do much. In Cali you won't pass smog because you are releasing some stuff through the breather, though it isn't much. In my case, where I had an intake made, I can't get a hose to attach to the intake so I am going to put a breather there. The bad stuff from the crankcase will go back into the engine to be "reburt" so it isn't so bad coming out the exhaust.
This is what a PCV system does.... --->
The air enters the valve cover via the tube which goes into your intake. The air travels around in the crankcase, picking up the vapor which escapes past your rings, and exits into your intake manifold.
heres a little linky
