The Corolla is still suspended by beam axle rear suspension, unlike the fully-independent double-wishbone rear suspension of the Civic. Both engines get comparably the same hp and fuel economy, however the Corolla has more torque. 130 ft-lbs vs. 115 ft-lbs I believe. I think the Corolla is slightly more expensive for the level of equipment that you get. Both cars are extremely reliable, well-built, and have high resale.
rk2002: Here is a side by side comparison of the 2002 Civic EX Sedan and the 2003 Corolla S Sedan. I hate to say this, but the Toyota S Sedan has more horsepower, weighs less, gets better gas mileage, has more headroom, costs less and has greater displacement (1.8L vs 1.7) than the Civic EX Sedan. I think the clear winner here is the Toyota. By the way, disregard the picture for the Civic Ex Sedan. They accidentally show a hatchback! Link below.

yeah like Klam said, options would probably bring the Toyota closer in price to the Civic. And I forgot to add, the Toyota has more cargo room.
I like the civic as far as looks are concerned. The toyota looks too much like an econo car or at least more so than the civic. Also, the corolla may have more hp and torque, but I don't think it is any faster than the civic. I just prefer honda's styling to toyota's.
<< keep in mind that there's never really been an aftermarket for Corollas >>
Yea, what he said tooooo!
I kind of like the look of the new Corolla "S" Sedan compared to the Civic sedan, but I am not really a 4 door kind of person thats why I bought the coupe, but all in all I will stick with m Honda products for now.

Thanks for your replies. I looked at both cars in the dealer lots on Sunday.
I also looked through a Consumer guide for 2002 cars and the Civic clearly won - the Corolla is also supposed to have poor acceleration (with the auto tranny).
I just thought the Corolla S looked sportier but I suppose I can't go wrong with the reliability of the Civic.
I could save some money by not getting some Corolla options. At least you get alloy wheels in the "S" option.

Actually in Canada, a fully-loaded Corolla S is around $1500 less than a Civic EX coupe (or Si). And the Corolla S gets fogs and 16" rims and spoiler, which are all optional on the EX (although in Canada, you do get 15" alloys).
<< The Corolla is still suspended by beam axle rear suspension, >>
Is that good or bad? Can't be worse than the bouncy rear-ends we have...
I had a corolla once. And it was nice. Still ahve it matter of fact. It's been through hell. But here's a pic. Tell me if you notice anything...er...aftermarket. (Hint...look at the lower grill section)

I'm looking for your (the car enthusiasts) opinions.
If I wanted to buy a car magazine, visit the web sites, and/or or read the sales brochures I would have done that already...

According to Consumer Reports Corolla clearly wins and they say starting 2001, Civic isn't as reliable as the previous Civics. The Corolla, you will need to pay for the alloy wheels. Comes in a Sports Package with Moon roof and Alloy Wheels.
Whoever said Corolla didn't have much aftermarket support is a moron. Have you ever been to Japan?

The initial reports indicate that the 2003 Corolla is a better car than the Honda Civic. And don't let anyone fool you. Neither Toyota nor Honda are any longer competing against the 'Big Three'. They are in a fight to the death with each other for control of the econo car compact market, and Toyota is 10 times bigger than Honda.
As far as the Corolla S, I would stay away from it it. All those sporty add ons, do not a sports car make. They can only fall off, or otherwise make the car look dated much quicker than usual. You do not want that with a Corolla.
The Corolla is still not that great looking. It looks better than the last generation (8th maybe) but it still looks Echoish. The Civic is a better looking car. But at this level, it is the car that counts.
I would not buy an 03 Corolla. I just bought my 01 Civic less than a year ago, and I doubt that the new Corolla is that much better to justify the expense of trading in a new car for a new model. I would rather wait until the 04 Corolla's come out and if there are any bugs, they should be worked out by then. I may trade in at that point. I'm not that impressed with Honda as a company at this point.

A lot of what everyone say is true.
Yesterday I had the opprotunity to check out the 2003 Corolla Sport upclose and personal. A friend of mine who works at a Honda Dealership.....just bought a Toyota Corolla S. Take that for whatever it's worth.
The major difference I noticed is the difference in the structure. The Corolla was *much* more solid than the Civic was. The doors opened with near Lexus-like smoothness, and slamed shut, with a satisfying thud, much like a German car. As improved as the Civics have compared to the 6th Gen, it is no match for the Corolla.
The paint also, parked side by side to a Civic, was a lot better. The Civic seemed too "orange peely" compared to it. I was shocked, because when I look at my car by itself, it looks great. But not in a side by side comparison.
Last generation Corolla's interior was pretty crappy, in my opinion. Even thought the fit & finish was top knotch, the quality of the plastics used inside was on par with Hyundai Accents. Not anymore. It uses similar material as our Civics, but with better fit & finish. Impressive. And dare I say.... better styling!
Additionally, upon close examination, the window moldings and other fine details were far more superior on the Corolla.
Which would I buy?
Definitely the Corolla. Toyota built this car after the 7th Gen Civic... and was designed to kill the competition. And it has all the neccessary ingredients to do it.
Having said that, I do not regret buying my Civic to this day. It's a 2-door coupe, something the Corolla does not offer. It has not been the most reliable car, but I've heard worst stories.
But in the 4-door econo market, Corolla is clearly the King.

Nope, the corolla is not the king. Honda rules lil'buddy. And I know a tech at the honda dealer that drives a gmc van. Hmmm...those people just work there. doh! I really don't consider one better than the other. The vic looks nicer imo and I like honda's styling better. The corolla still looks like a grandma car. Anyhow, the grass is always greener on the other side. I think some people need to jump off the fence and get it over with. It's amazing how people distort facts and their opinions to agree with what their mind's want them too. Just amazing.
most people would like the corolla s coz its not another civic...i like it coz it looks like a mini (o'l skool) gs300 from the rear...and a mini camry at the front...
i wanted a 2 door car...thats why i got the civic...i also got the lx and i paid at least $5000 CND less than the corolla s..i just wanted the luxury options and gas mileage not really interested in the power...
go test drive both...i think it'll give you a better insight into which is really a better car...just don't listen to the salesperson

Definitly a Corolla. I've has 3 of them. Why three? Cuz people around me can't drive for $hit. I have nothing but praise for the corolla of all generations. Their chasis is definitly more rigid than ours. They're handling is also better. Forget that we have that double wishbone crap, if it doesn't handle well, who cares what we have. The engine? Standard VVT-i 1.8L which cranks out more tq and more HP and also has better milage than our stupid D blocks. Reliability is also WAY better, don't forget it's toyota we're talking about, not Honda. And when it all comes down to it, price. CHEAPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And for after market stuff??? Try finding a source in hong kong or japan, they got enuff stuff.
And for all you skeptics, this one is a shot in your stomach, the Corolla Trueno (JDM) beats the Civc EG SiR (JDM).

I don't know, I love my honda and the 5 previous ones that I have owned. All had bullet-proof reliability. Several were driven past 150k. Anyhow, it is ignorant for anyone to say that toyotas reliability is better than hondas. Especially, acting like it is far better. The bottom line is these companies are basically equivalent in quality and reliability. They differ on styling for the most part. Also, people say the corolla has more power acting like it has 20-30 more when in reality, it is more like 3hp. Lastly, for the ones who love the corollas so much, have had them in the past, and want one so bad, why are you now driving a honda civic.
