CRX Si vs. 96-00 hatchback?
I'm contemplating buying either of these vehicles, but I'm wondering what you guys think of them. I used to hate the the 96-00 hatchback rear end, but now I think it looks great. I guess it's an acquired taste. As for the CRX, it has aged really well but they are semi-hard to find under 100,000 miles.
I'm not interested in customizing, I just want to buy and keep a stock version. I'm concerned about road noise since they are both hatchbacks. I'm wondering what their strengths and weaknesses are.
Damn those CRX's look sweet!

That EK is pricey I'm sure, and looks super sweet, but I'm not into the racer image. But regarding the CRX, what about the standard model? I keep reading that they still perform very well even at 93 horsepower on a 1.5. No, I would say you gotta go for the Si if you're looking for a CRX (a very responsive car even with some miles, and there is a big difference in the interior with the Si), but I agree it will be hard to find one under 100K. I've seen a few out there in really good condition, there was a guy in my area that had a 75K Si in really good condition, but was trying to get 7 grand for it, a little high in my opinion but these things are a commodity.
I owned a '90 Si for about 5 years, got it in '96 at 78K (for only $6K - 10 years later and the price on these things has not dropped). Outstanding car until it hit about 130K. Had to replace a lot of parts, such as the radiator, clutch, shocks, hatch struts, ended up busting a timing belt and messed up the head - had to get that replaced, and a bunch of other little things.
My experience would tell me that the 96-00 hatch is going to give you a lot more reliability, Honda was a different company in the late 90's than it was in the late 80's - the 6th gen Civics were very solid.
I have an '04 EX coupe now, I will say that my '90 Si was probably a little faster even with a lot of miles, though I had some things done to it. So it just depends what you want.

I'll probably buy one of these instead.
Have you guys read or heard anything negative about the HX sedans? They have 115 hp and get up to 45 on the freeway.

Well I've decided to buy a 96-00 hatchback instead. Unfortunately I'm having a hard time finding the history and specs on each year. Do you guys know any good websites for researching hondas or specifically hatch histories?
The Hatch CX has no power steering, which seems cool, but it doesn't have a tachometer either. Can I get one with no power steering and a tach?

Thanks for the info. I want to also ask, did honda remove sound disipation material from the 96-00 civic HX to decrease weight and to increase gas mileage? I was reading reviews and a lot of people weren't happy with the road noise of the HX, while I didn't find as many comments on the noise with the DX and LX models, and obviously the EX. What's the story with this?
