WHO HATES THOSE INTERSECTION CAMERAS?!?
OMG i was in LA yesterday and there was one at La Cienega and Wilshire...I dunno how and who the cameras fotograph but i went into the intersection while it was still yellow and about 3/4 way in, the light turned red! So i'm freakin out if the camera got me or not. On the www.hwysafety.org it says the cameras photograph those who enter the intersection after the light has turned red. But my bro said there was a guy at traffic school who said the rear part of his car was still in the intersection and he got a ticket. My other friend got a ticket in rowland heights on colima and this one small street but he got photographed because the light turned red .5 seconds before he even got in the intersection. Has anyone experienced these PAIN IN THE a$$ things before or know more information about how they choose who's photographed and all. I'mma lose my car if i get another ticket(my mom bought me the car and i already got a ticket for speeding and so she'll straight up take my keys away) and i'm going crazy. If i dont get anything in the mail within a month then i know i'm fine. Help me out fellow members. Thanks.

hehe. I ran one accidentally... I felt like a movie star as the cameras got me from all different angles... the night lit up with lights everywhere...
I even smiled. hahaha.
good thing I just got my car, and the license plate hasn't arrived yet. hehe.

Here in New York, the photos produced by the red-light, or intersection cameras are first studied by a police officer and then if determined that the vehicle was in violation of failing to obey a red traffic light, a summons is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. The amount in New York is $50, and it is a civil penalty and does not get assessed to anyones driving record as there is no way to determine who was operating the vehicle. This is just like a parking ticket--the registered owner is reponsible for it. I am not sure how it is done in other places, and there is always the option to plead not guilty, but it really is not worth it in my opinion.
You guys are gonna hate me, but I think traffic cameras are there for a reason. Even if it's yellow, you're forced to gun it and consequently hit cars that do not yield or pedestrians. If you drive carefully and obey traffic laws than there is no reason to worry about the eye in the sky. The intersection cameras do more than catch red light runners; they can record traffic accidents and determine who is at fault.
I personally think that red light cameras are a great idea.
IMO, about the stupidest thing you can do while driving is to push orange/red lights. When you do so, you generally accelerate harder while proceding through a place where every other vehicle around you is a making split second decision about whether to also proceed or not. Split second decisions, as we know, are not always the most rational. Therefore, if you consider that most intersectional accidents occur on left-hand turns where the most vulnerable part of a vehicle is exposed (the side), then factor in the increase of speed of people pushing the amber/red light, and the less than dependable split second decisions of most people, and you have an extremely dangerous situation.
I know i'd rather get a ticket then kill the innocent passenger in another car.
Photo radar, however, is another story.....

I don't know anywhere in NY that has photo radar...very costly. I certainly think that red light cameras do a good job--way too many people speed it up at a yellow, when in fact you are required to stop at a yellow if you are able to safely do so. While I rarely write tickets, if I happen to see someone intentionally speed up at a yellow light, I'll stop them and see what the rush is...

Well this hasnt helped me at all guys...someone help me in my situation...and also! Those cameras are especially stupid when people must make left turns at green lights and what if someone has to wait till all the oncoming traffic pass by and you end up getting stuck turning when its red?! anyways help me out someone...on when it actually photographs and all.
TopFuel, as far as when it photographs, and I can only speak for how they operate in New York...it starts going after the light has turned to red. Therefore, anyone who *ENTERS* the box (or intersection) after a red light has been displayed is in violation according to the vehicle and traffic law and gets the picture taken. Someone who slides through on a yellow is guilty of avoiding a traffic control light, however they do not get a their picture taken as the camera is only there for the sole purpose of getting people who fail to obey a red traffic light. I would assume California is similar, as New York vehicle and traffic laws are similar to those of CA. If you did get the summons, you'll probably get it in about one to two weeks. As I said, it's not worth it pleading not guilty if you get it.

To get a ticket, you should really have a human that can use his judgement before getting a $100+ ticket and jacking up insurance rates... sure there might be 95% of people who get caught on camera that deserve a ticket, but what about the rest that, for some reason, had no choice to be in the intersection when it turns red...
That's when you plead "not guilty" and explain why you had to be in an intersection when the light was red. I said before that here by me, an officer looks at the photos (all angles are photographed) and then determines if you are in violation. Also like I said, it does not start taking pics if you were in the intersection waiting to take a left and it turns red. In New York, it will only take pictures if a car enters the intersection after the light has turned red.

I understand that there is a professional who looks at the pictures and there are also automated safeguards in the camera, but IMO, that is not a complete replacement for an officer seeing the guy with his own two eyes. The camera can only see a split second of time (or a few) , not an entire situation...
but i can see your argument silver

k thanks silver for your help and 2001civicex didnt want to seem ungrateful about your replies but i'm just stressing over this thing. From the sound of it, i think i will be fine if the camera only fotographs those who come in the intersection after the red light goes on, i went in when it was yellow and it turned red 3/4 way in. Hopefully these cameras are the same throughout the US.
I live in South Cali, and a co-worker ran a red light in Winnetka/Sherman Way
They work the same way as that one in Wilshire Blvd. He was driving a company vehicle, so the boss mailed in his DL Number and he had to pay $250. He also had to go to Traffic School to get it off his record. He says he entered when it was yellow, but I REAAAAAALY Doubt it as I live 200 feet away from that light and I go through it in Yellow all the time.
I don't mean to scare you or anything, Just telling you my story
