Manual vs. Automatic
I'm different from most of you people. I bought the Civic as a daily and a car that I can basically beat up. Not literally, I mean get the job done. That's why it's a sedan with an auto. Maybe somewhere along the line I'll put some mods on it but what can I say I'm a Benz man for life.
<< I got an auto because I'm not a racer. I just care about looks. hehe.. who else here has driven like 10 minutes with your knee?
>>hell yah, lol...it's so fun, haha...oh yah..and i have an auto..my dad wouldn't let me buy manual cuz he thinks it's too much of a hassel even though i know how to drive a stick
i got an auto cuz...uhhhh....i want NOS.
no, i just got an auto cuz i didn't pay for the car, and my GP wouldn't buy me anything but auto for fear of the FandtheF syndrome....
hell i'm not complaining, i got a car...

LOOKS is a MUST!! shiit, I've gotten in 3 wrecks in an automatic!! ..why the hell is my pops gunna sign for a brand new manual for?!!? ohh well I'm happy when all the little kids point at my car & I help them pick their chin off the floor..cause they were drooling on the pavement..My car just LOOKS & SOUNDS fast!!MINE
i got a manual because i had a 99 civic ex that was a auto..it had NO pick up at all!
i hated it! so this time i went with a manual..its a little better but at least its not as boring!
i love it!.....
but i dont understand why most guys think girls cant drive a stick!

Wow, I'm surprised at the number of responses...
I agree with Kori, Diznavis and Shanas2k1CivicEx about the boring part... How many of you out there have fallen asleep driving? I did... Good thing it was one-way highway traffic. I tapped the car beside me and woke up (and pulled over for the whole insurance/damage deal). And I definitely like the control. But I do see the points about autocross but shifting should become natural as pointed out.
Of course, I don't race so speed isn't a deal for me. I see automatics as something that's "practical" or "convienient". Less fun. I see looks and mods as something fun so I think they should go together. But I understand everyone wants their car to look good too. And I get that not everyone knows how to drive a manual.
Another reason I like the manual. It's cheaper and has better mileage. Oh, wait... Doesn't that fall under practical? Damn. Foiled again.
I love antidote11's response. I'll have to try that sometime.

I drive stick for numerous reasons. But for all you auto owners, haha I don't hate you!
more gears so closer ratio's = faster
less money
less weight
I love having a clutch
better mileage
more control
use engine the engine and low gears to keep speed down on hills, instead of riding the brakes.

I've run into this question a lot lately from friends etc. and having contemplated it to the fullest degree, I've decided that yes, it would be nice to drive a standard, you have more control over the car... however, there are some days when you just want to be lazy (well, at least I do). The problem is, unless you're wealthy enough to own two vehicles, you don't have a chance at the availability of both systems.
That said, what do you decide on when you purchase your car? Manual, to have the control, or Automatic to suit people like me when you just don't feel like shifting coz its 4am and the only thing other than the way home in your mind is how comfortable is your bed is?
My automatic works for all around driving... I don't have intentions or aspirations to mod my car to hell, All i want are some nice wheels, a system, and the tinted windows I already have. Racing, especially street racing is not something on my agenda so the manual tranny is out of the question for me.
What I would really love to see is a tranny in which you can actually switch from automatic control to standard control by switching your stick shift into 'auto' or something... Then I will give a manual tranny a more serious consideration

Hey , I know most of you guys and gals know how to drive stick but it sounds like some of you forgot how to drive an automatic. You are allowed to actually touch the shift lever after you put it in drive you know!lol This allows you to control your upshifts for acceleration and your downshifts for engine braking just like a manual trans. (except for 1st gear) Manual trans. do have their advantages with closer gear ratio's and less clutch slippage but mainly it's just more fun to drive when you wanna go go go!

yeah the first civ i had was auto

The point is this. If you want your car just to ride and look good, get auto. If you want it for speed and performance tuning, get manual. You can also do perf tuning for auto, but you will get more power from the manual. I have an auto because I know that if I got a manual I would have gone speeding.

you can drive stick and still be lazy once you get used to it you dont even think about shifting anymore, you just do it. the one and only time i ever drove drunk, the only thing that wasnt weird was the shifting, it just came naturally. i thought i would probably stall it a lot, especially with the difficult clutch in my 88 dodge omni, but i had no problem at all. high beams were a different story, i passed like 3 or 4 cars on the way home and i didnt remember to turn my high beams off even once until after they passed

i wish i had a stick but an auto is okay too no reason why we cant modify our cars. If i wanted to race everyone in town it would be with a car faster than a civic. I love modifing my car to make it my unique car. Its a one of a kind. Even with an auto we have plenty of get up and go for an aggressive driving style.
Well I hated Manuals when I was 15 just learning to drive in my moms 88 Civic but once I got the hang of it and started driving my Subaru and the civic off and on which were both Manuals I totally wouldn't touch any cars that were automatic. Now if I was talking like a Lexus or Benz I would like the automatic its a luxury car and I don't plan on decking those out too much. But I would only buy an Automatic if it had the 5 speed. But for the Civics I feel that they are suppost to be fun in the manual, but everyone has their fun in different transmissions.
My Dads new Accord is a Automatic and I always reach for the clutch and hate riding the brakes. Actually wait that is on every Automatic I have driven LOL

I love much love for all the transmission types.
I started out with an auto on my 1st car and it was nice to just press the pedal to get more speed. I did drive with my knees for about 10 mins, and I can smoke or call on my cell phone more easily.
I have a manual now, and I can do all of the above except for talk on my cell in traffic. But I have a hands free kit so I can do all of the above. If you drive a manual enough times, you don't even consciously think about shifting, it just happens.
