Manual vs. Automatic
I was looking through the member's rides and noticed a lot of people have automatics AND modify their cars... Personally, I don't understand this. Why not go with a M.T. in the first place? It would surprise me that someone who would know how to mod his car would not know how to drive a manual.
Opinions? I'd like to hear from both types of drivers. Get both sides. Personally, I've gone with the manual (with no intention of modifying it).

some people don't like the hassle of manual in traffic. i don't need to worry about traffic, and i love driving stick, so i got the 5-speed. makes for better mods. and some people with a lot of mods, don't do the work themselves, just have enough $$ to pay somebody else to do it.
Some people drive their cars to and from work every day, through rush hour traffic. Driving through heavy is much more convenient with an auto than with a manual.
D'oh, beat me to it .

Ahh, yes... Traffic. Forgot about that. Good thing I'm in a smaller city... Traffic isn't too bad here. Doesn't take long to get onto a major road.
Personally, I find the car much more predictable when driving a manual... I remember borrowing my mom's car and trying to merge into the highway. It didn't stay in a low enough gear long enough so I couldn't accelerate fast enough. Kinda scary.

i understand the traffic thing. but to me, i would still get the manual for the times that im not dealing with rush hour traffic. or if i lived in a city and was able to, i would take the subway or something (but that depends on how bad the traffic is) that way, save miles on your car and i wouldnt have hated myself for getting an automatic. I also think mods respond better to manuals because you can control when you shift (i know you can control when you shift with an auto, but thats a pain in the ****) personally, i think the only time i will ever drive an auto is when i have kids and have to get a minivan or something, but then of course i will still have my toys.
All my life I've been driving manual, my 2k1 and my CRX are manual, if you really love it, you don't care about traffic...if you start whinning about heavy traffic and constantly changing gear, you go get an auto and quit whinning.
Well, personally, I dont know how to drive a manual, although I wish I did. I never learned.
So are you saying its stupid to modify your car if you have an automatic? Some people go for show, not racing(or whatever reason you think us automatic people shouldnt mod our cars). I've put money into my automatic because I LIKE my car. Mainly for the looks I guess, plus its fun.
There, theres my opinion.

i think it's just a matter of preference and perhaps availablity as well as the whole traffic thing. Although I live where there's alot of traffic I chose manual for racing capabilities.
personally, I have a auto because I drive my car everyday to work then school, then gong out everynight. I just know it would annoying for me to have stick, even though I know stick and could have gottn one when I went and bought my car, I just choose to have an auto. And plus I'm not that BIG into racing capabilities just a FLY look.
I drive an Auto and I mod it.....I don't understand why people think that you can't and / or shouldn't mod an auto....
WTF is the reasoning behind this...?? My auto will respond to mods the same as your manual...and of course I know how to drive a manual...but anyways...bring on the manuals, I will be more than happy to race'em and kick thier asses
with my little Auto...
Difference between Auto and Manual.....
Manual - you push in clutch and shift
Auto - A computer does this for you......WTF is the big difference in that....I can control my RPM range by pushing and letting off the accelerator which in return controls the throttle.....again, WTF ?

I have an automatic, and I drive autocross. Personally I think its better, because in autocross having to shift can really screw up your times, because of lack of focus on the road. I used to have a 300zx Turbo 5-speed, so I do know how to drive a stick.
If I feel the need later on, I may add a shiftronic control module to my car which level10 makes right now for hondas, (formula-1 cars use shiftronic control aswell). Basically so that I can keep it in any gear I want, and control when it shifts. But I also heard that AEM's Programmable Engine Management System can do the same thing, for about the same price, and you get a bunch of extra stuff with it.

Well.........
driving an auto or stick is just a matter of choice....
I drove around 20k in a Bimmer with auto, and i have around 20k with my stick 2k1.......
but i love the stick way better......
even though that 325xi had 19x hp, and could kill most of the civics, but because of the stick, most of the time i will go with my 2k1
P.S. that bimmer is my ex's car
and also, I've tried the different between an auto and a stick with 2k1.
with stock, stick IS faster.

AUTOBOTS UNITE!!!
I have an auto and i plan on macking it out for the hell of it...just want a cool ride that's all, nothing more. Don't need to beat every car on the road, just want to be comfortable and enjoy my friggin ride...dats all, just another opinion.

Ah, but think about it. The manual offers 5 gear ratios for the driver to select from, while the auto only has 4 gear ratios to select from.
Let's say we're drag racing (at the track of course, i have too many points). Now I've never driven one but for the sake of argument I'm in a 2001 EX, as Tess would trounce you pretty bad
We're both sitting on the line, you have your civic in 1 and are brake torquing to what, maybe 1800rpms or so? I'm sitting there with my manual, clutch in, at 3000 rpms.
Now, The light turns green and we both get .500 reaction times (i'm a nice guy huh?) . My car is going to launch harder because i started at a higher RPM, AND my car has a more favorable 1st gear ratio. I powershift into 2nd gear, and you're still winding out first. This is where I might stop pulling for a moment, as you are high in your RPM range and in a shorter gear. As soon as you go into 2nd gear, i'm pulling away again with my shorter gear ratio. Now, Towards the end of the track, i shift into 3rd gear, which again might give you a moment where your not in as great of a disadvantage *if* you're also about to shift into 3rd.
See the difference yet? It's not so much that i'm controlling my gears, and more that my gear ratios are closer together allowing me to accelerate quicker.
Autos are popular in high powered cars because they make for more consistent times, and in the case of turbo cars, allow the car to come off the line with the turbo spooled.
Yep, yep, it doesn't take much to go straight, might aswell have bought a domestic.
On the other hand, when you're autocrossing, and trying to accelerate out of a turn, but notice that you don't have enough torque to pull the turn, because your in the wrong gear. I will be 2 car lengths ahead of you crossing the finish line, while you are deciding what gear to go into and hitting 5 cones because you can't concentrate on the course.
But really, there's nothing wrong with an auto or a stick, you can argue both ways. Its all a matter of personal preference.

With only 2 gears to pick from when autoxing, it's not like anyone is performing brain surgery when deciding what gear to select. The "poor" Type R guys have to do it what, 5 or 6 times, and they don't seem to have any trouble.

I live in Atlanta, rated in the top 5 Worst Traffic Jams, and I still love my manual. Try being stuck on I-285. Gives me hands a real workout. Still trying to master driving in 1st smoothly enough to A) not get a whiplash, and B) inadvertently smashing my forehead on the steering wheel. Chugging out once in awhile is always good for a laugh.

I've been driving a stick since i was 12, i dislike autos because i prefer having total control, and having a solid connection to the ground. Autos are cool for traffic but if you drive stick enough you dont notice yourself shifting anymore. autos also rob your engine of power.

I think someone mentioned it before. It's all a matter of personal preference. I jsut agree with Kori...I like to feel in control. Automatic can be so sluggish at times. So she's right, there is a little more vroom vroom.
But hey, personal preference, again, is the main thing here. It's not what's better or whats worse. They both surve their purpose(s)

i didnt want to give the impression that i was raggin on autos. it is just a personal preference for me. i do feel that i have more control with the standard (especially in the snow)
i live on a hill, with hills around me, with hills around them, and more...and so on...a manual is a str8t up bi tch to drive on steep hills, especailly at a stop light slanting backwards...thats the main reason i got an auto, and i can still mod it...when people wanna race me in traffic i let them go ahead, and let them get a ticket...and then make fun of them...LOL
Here's going up a hill at 60 in an automatic.
<<
The car slows to 55 so you apply more throttle, then apply more throttle, the transmission unlocks the torque converter...more throttle... FINALLY decides to downshift, but then it wants to accelerate on the 3/4 throttle you have down, so you release the throttle some, and the transmission upshifts, and decelerates...so you then apply more throttle, to make the car downshift again....its an unending cycle until you get pissed and manally shift the car into 3rd ANYWAY >>
