To Those Who Have Body Kits
you always want to get any body kit painted without it on the car, because there are spots on the kit that you want to get painted such as the bottom and that would be really hard to do without, also body kits expand and contract so it may leave unpainted spots viewable thats why you need to paint it off the car!
Who are you? So your sayin that all body kits must be painted off? Well what about a wide body kit or a bodykits that is grafted to the body with say? bondo? how would you paint that off? Expand and contract? whaaaaaa? plastics and fibre glass dont expand and contract because plastic is too dense to absorb moisture and fibreglass has gelcoat to seal fibers! Now i have never seen a wooden body kit unless we are talking about a wagon or a panel van! To answer the question- any descent painter can precision mask parts on car as well as paint on car!Dakota
Just go to the place that is gonna paint it for you.. (check other places to)
and ask would be the best way. They should tell you.. if not then just draw straws.. lol

Some people paint the kit when its OFF the car...i.e. lip kits or simple bumper/sideskirt kits. But in the case of molded on kits, or widebodies...then they are usually painted while on the car. No need to get fiesty people! Its all a matter of which shop you take it to and what they usually do.

You ALWAYS fit the body kit first, then paint it, then install it. Off of the body. UNLESS you are grafting it on to the body, then there is no other way. Ask any body guy. All replacement parts (bumpers, etc.) are painted off the car. Things like rear quarters cant be done that way obviously. Same goes for body kits. I would hate to see a body kit painted on the car, all the seams would look like poo real quickly, unless it was molded to the body. Oh, and if you are molding it to the body with bondo, you are going to be in real trouble, you would need to use fiberglass.
Ask any bodyman? Whaaaaa? dude thats what i do ! and thats what i am! And if you say that the stuff cant be painted on cause it'll look cheesy, then go look at my members ride! what i did was i painted the peices that weren't accessable off the car like around headlamps and some edges! then i hung the bumper on the car! i hung bumper on the car cause the bumper is urethane, and when it gets hot it will take any shape you want it! and the bumper needed to be baked 2-3 times to get the mold releasing agent completely off the bumper! Then waxed and grease and dried and then tacked bumper off then shot it with ppg NBP base with Glaserite clear! Glaserite clear is nice cause it cures harder than most and while it is cureing you can wet sand the clear flat and buff so no orange peel is apparent!

You still had to edge it off the car.... thats not exactly what i was talking about. Seems like it would have been easier to paint the whole thing off the car instead of half n half. But you do have me though, i dont know bake booth procedures. I just install body kits, and our body guys never paint anything on the car if they dont have to.
That is funny but true that is the thing to do now just put it on unpainted. It gives you that I just got it look. I have seen some guys with unpainted hoods and they are just leaving it like that cause people thing it is carbon from far away. That is funny too.
I would never put it on unpainted! It would suck to have to try to find all of the rock chips and scrapes and suff later! and plus getting all the road rash off would suck! Plus it only costs me a six pack of redhook ipa and a couple bong hits to get my whole front end painted! AAAAhHh ! The power of weed!dakota
