Transmission Question
Transmission Question
I searched through the 16 pages of results that come with the term 'Transmission' and got about halfway through...
It looks like 01-03 trannys make the car not worth buying... I didn't find a single person with an 04/05 tranny that had it break... did Honda fix the problem during the 04/05 years?

I'm guessing you are talking about automatic transmissions.
The small number of transmission failures compared to the number of cars sold would show you that the 01-03s are worth buying.
Don't let the stuff you found here scare you off.
You do realize you are on a Civic forum where car owners are more likely to modify and/or beat on their cars in some way?
If this site consisted of mostly baby boomers then yes I would say 01-03s are not worth the buy.
But 7thgencivic consists of mostly 16+ to 20 somethings who are looking to customize their cars to their liking and that usually means something will go wrong along the way.
It may not apply to everyone but its true if you look around this site some more.
My 01 automatic transmission failed on me but I beat on it for most of its 45k life.
I have 60k+ on the new one and its still going strong because I treat it better.

i have a 04 auto and i downshifted a lot when i had it early. Its at 55k now and still going strong. But i drive pretty easy on it now too. If you can get a 04 i would get it. The 04-05's build quality is a lot better then the 01-03's in my opinion.

The 04/05 automatics are better than the older ones, but in general a automatic is good for only one thing, and that's a normal daily driver. If you even think you might want to enter the car in a drag race or autocross, don't get a automatic. They tend to take very small amounts of abuse at best, now there are some people that have beat them daily with no problems, but it's rare. Go with a manual tranny if you can; not only can a manual trans take more abuse, but they're cheaper to repair.
Thanks for the replies guys, the civic is going to be for driving only, I don't care if its 5spd or auto... doesnt' matter one bit.
I have a supra to race, autocross, all that stuff, i just need a slow reliable great on gas daily driver...
I'm definatly going to get an 04/05, i just wanted to hear what the board has to say about the transmissions. have the manual trannys had any problems?

the manuals have always been pretty strong. Just the 01-03 auto trannies had problems. They fixed all the problems in 04-05. The build quality in general is just better in the 04-05.
Nothing works better than a Chris except a Honda.

I have not had any issues whatsoever. My family has 2 Civics, the '01 has 90k miles on and the '03 probably around 30k. NEVER had a transmission problem on either car.
Great daily driver, I just wish I had better tires...
If I recall properly, most of the guys that had issues also thought their cars were fast or tried to make their cars fast. I guess you do that to your Supra though... So you won't have any issues with a Civic.

I have 03 EX Coupe with over 108K miles. I drove the car very aggressively and downshifted often at high speeds and high rpms. I expected the Civic's transmission to last forever behind the wheel of an unaggressive driver. But at my hands, I feared it would break. To avoid this, I had the dealer drainand replace the transmission fluid every 30k (draining and refilling 3 times at 60k and 90k intervals). I have had no problems and no hints of a breakdown. I think the engine mounts are slightly starting to give in but the powertrain itself is in top shape with no problems.

pretty sure the 04-05's are fixed. the 01-03's had lots of kinks they needed to fix. there's this one site with all that info on it, someone on this forum had a link to it. had all the things they changed. suspension specs that were changed from the 01 to 05 civics etc etc

it doesn't seem like honda makes auto trannies very well. my friend had his auto on his old v6 legend go out at like 90k miles. and the 98-02 accord v6s and the older TLs and CLs had faulty trannies too. and even honda's manual trannies aren't that up to par, at least in their normal cars, they seem to be for the more normal driver, and not even for the slightly spirited driver.
the performance trannies, such as the s2k and civic si and rsx seem to do well. except those 02-04 type-s's

Car was babied while my dad drove it to work everyday for 32,000 miles at which time the 2001 5-speed tranny failed.
Anyone who thinks the 01-02 trannys aren't junk is ignorant.
