everyone's going from inlines to Vs because of crash regulations. Big long engines don't crash that well (a V6 is half as long as an inline 6). It's a shame because the inline 6s were monster's (mainly because you can spread the shock over 5 main bearings instead of 3 or 4 in a V6). I think that the new Japanese sports cars are pretty weak though (there's a whole section on ls1tech.com where people are swapping corvette (and Z28/transam) motors into 240s, RX-7s and BMWs). I like foreign cars, but I like domestic motors.

The only 90s sports car that hasn't gone to a substially higher displacement engine is the Mazda RX series staying at a healthy 1.3 liters. They should compete with the new supercars with a 2.0 Liter RENESIS
Sure thing.

Keep the I's whilst ignoring crash regulations? Don't think so. Remember most companies wanted to squeeze the most power and efficiency out of whichever engine they could and I6's provided greater weight balance whilst still providing the efficiency of a V6.

And I don't think an I8 is possible or reliable nowadays... will search for that, though.

About the 1.3L Renesis: since the engine has a different burn process, it doesn't need a higher displacement. If they ever get to do a 2.0L (which they will, eventually) it'll be shooting a far higher HP number than what's available on the market. Ah, another thing. Less displacement = less materials = less weight = usually faster acceleration. Now they just balance that with high rev ft-lbs or whatever they use... and you get RX series.

This is where the market is trying to converge. Corvettes and Vipers are true American muscle cars that actually handle well, while foreign sportscars are gaining more hp constantly (which is also what is shooting their prices up so high.

i think it would be the 3rd one. this is toyota's answer to the hole in their lineup. if you think about it, the MR2 is getting dropped and they don't have anything to go against the S and the Z. oh did you guys know that it's a convertible hardtop??? yeh same as the new VW Eos coming up. the S and the Z needs a new facelift because we have new players in the field and it sure will stir things up.

It wont be a Supra, in fact I'd bet on it not even being badged a Toyota (likely a Lexus) People simply wont spend $40K+ for a Toyota. We learned that with the MKIV Supra, which although it was amazing and an incredibly over-engineered car, it was essentially a failure as it was too expensive for a Toyota. It COULD be the new SC. That would make the most sense. As far as it being a S2000 / 350Z-type sportscar I highly doubt it. Yes that is a "Hole" in Toyota's market, but you have to look at things from an overall view. Where does Toyota make $$$$? From corollas, camrys etc. not sportscars. They are doing extemely well and thus dont need a midlevel sportscar in hopes of pumping up the brand image and selling more corollas/camry's. Mazda and Nissan for example needed that to bolster overall sales. I just dont see them taking such a big risk on something thats not really going to net them a large amount of money. Where they are right now they don't feel the need to take risks, whereas they had to when they were trying to establish themselves in the N. American market. Now they're at the top and they dont need low-volume cars except for 1 or 2 higher end flagship lexus models. (LFA most likely) From a revenue standpoint. Supra = loss of money, 2nd/3rd gen MR2 = loss of money, Celica = loss of money. Toyota's goal is to be #1 and they think the way to do that is simple. Cut losses (I.E. sportscars) and go with the bread and butter sure things that have been working for them for years now.

If they DO make a new supra it would be the first time they've officially revived a dead nameplate. They semi-revived the MR2, but it was an MRS and a Total failure for them. If the Supra failed back in 93-98 they sure wont make the same mistake again. Besides, if they do come out with something similar to that illustration I'd rather buy an MKIV Supra. No Turbo, no thanks

oh and regarding the 2JZ/1JZ/1GG inline engines, its really sad that they've done away with them. GREAT engines with great potential.
And WTH is up with having the new IS250/350 powered by V6's?
IS = Inline Six. An IS without and inline engine is just plain stupid.

the supra looks like an s2k from the back and a 350z from the front

the new nsx doesnt tickle my fancy. the thing i love about the current nsx's are the unmatching front and rear. but meh
