True or Not True About Engine Break in...Plzz Read

I have a friend who has a a brand new subaru wrx and he told me that for the engine to brake in into a fast car u have to push ur car. Meaning take the rpms high a little bit more then every once in a while. He learned this from a friend who had a car(dont remember which kind) but that by doin this during his break in period he was able to shave a full second of his stock car...he said u should do this for the first 5000 miles. I have 1300 miles on my car and for the first 600 miles i babied my car by not taking any higher then 3500rpm. Is any of this true or is he just bullshitting? Thanks

WELL WHEN I GOT MY CIVIC, IT HAD TEN MILES AND THA DEALER TOLD ME NOT TO RACE (OR REV HIGH) UNTIL AT LEAST 600-800 MILES BUT TO DRIVE LIKE I WOULD NORMALY... BUT OF COURSE ME BEING THA DUMB-A$$ THAT I AM I RACED MY CIVIC FOR THA FIRST TIME WITH 230 MILES... I DIDNT RACE TO OFTEN BUT I DEFINETELY RACED MORE THAN I SHOULD HAVE BEFORE I HIT 600 MILES... BY THA TIME I HIT AROUND 3000 MILES I HAD RACED ANOTHER 2K1 CIVIC ( ME BEING TOTALLY STOCK AND HIM HAVING EXAUST AND HEADER(S)) WE WERE BOTH EX'S AND BOTH 5SPDS AND I BEAT HIM THREE TIMES... NOW IM NOT AN EXPERT AND I DONT KNOW IF DRIVING YOUR CAR HARD IN THA BEGGINING MAKES IT FASTER... BUT IT SURE DIDNT HURT MY RIDE... IM NOT SAYING THAT BECAUSE I RAN IT HARD FROM THA BEGGINING IT MADE MY CAR ANY FASER BUT I DO THINK THAT BECAUSE I RAN MY CAR HARDER THAT IT IS USED TO THA HARDNESS AND USED TO ME REVVING HIGH... JUSS MY OPINION...

Yes I went by the manual and did not push the car. I have heard that if you do push it would be bad. Many other car makers also suggest that you don't push your car.

Of course we all seem to be thinking short term... but think long-term... then think why the manual says not to push it hard. Think of it as the car being a kid... you want the kid to do better when it gets older, right? Treat the car well in it's break in period, and later in the long-run it'll return the favor... just like kids do.

I dunno about shaving off a second, though... every car (like a kid) is different.

I think you definitely did the right thing by taking it easy - beating the crap out of your car during the 600 mile break-in period will not turn it into a race car. I would be more concerned long term durability and having an engine that would last for many years. My 2k1 now has close to 35,000 miles and seems to be running better than ever. One thing I always do is to drive the car several miles to where it is warmed up before I hit the higher rpms.
