New cars
New cars
Let's face it, most of us here love our cars for various reasons. I bought it new a year ago, and being a full-time student, I love the fact that I am yet to complain about its reliability. It's also frugal on gas, which in our times it's a good thing(tm).
However, I love cars and I keep myself informed about the industry at large, like most of us here. The thing is that I see pretty much the same ol tactic in new cars : peppy new look, add a few pounds and voila..
Which brings me to the point of my post : If I am to buy a new car, I have a list of very specific requirements that will either all be present, or I keep my civic.
- F1-style paddle shifters, now present in the Audi A3, M3, Acura RL, etc.. with at least 6 gears.
- good weight distribution (the 911's in my opinion sucks, compared to a nice 50/50 or 52/48)
- decent curb weight, around 1000kilos
- torquey 6 or 8 cylinder, outputs around 300hp.
- adjustable air suspension for our crappy roads : the Touareg and the Cayenne both have it as an option. I need my car to be track-ready at the push of a button, but comfy enough for regular usage.
- RWD or AWD platform with LSD's.
- two doors
- NOT an SUV
That's pretty much it for me. What would you absolutely want in a new car?

Well, I'd get two different cars. An everyday car, and a sportscar. I want nice sedan with power and a sporty factor. I'm thinking something between an RL and a WRX.
Everyday car:
AWD
fuel efficient for a car in its class
sedan
good suspension, but not track ready
Spotscar
lightweight
Front-engined RWD
track ready suspension
balanced car with 50/50
convertible

Kinda makes sense to actually get two cars : one for the track and one as a daily-driver, but given the state of traffic in the morning, I seriously doubt I will get a car to be driven to work daily, anytime this century.
My ideal car would then be a S2000 with a converible steel roof like the SLK's, 7 gears with paddle shifters and an adjustable suspension :-D
It's not that unrealistic for a wish, given that the technology is already there, just not in a package which contains them all.

I want one too! I just love them!
Acceleration from 0 to 100mph in about the time it takes you to start your Civic!
Truth is that no matter what kind of engine and suspension you throw on a chassis sure, it WILL go fast in a straight line, but if you want to hit a curb fast, and take on 3G's for the duration of a curve, you need downforce, and that costs dineros : think open-wheeled racecars. The best you can do in a family sedan on a closed track is what the FIA boys are doing in their Fia GT series. They race carbon-fiber murcielagos and ferraris, and you can really see downforce being an issue when your race prepped exotic barely hits 1G in a curb...
That is why I think 300hp is more than enough to have fun in a 1000kilo street car. The shift paddles are just the top of the ice-cream
