The engine code should be stamped on the block somewhere, generally under the heads and above the manifolds on the front of the engine. The easier way might be to look up the specs on the internet. I'm trying to look for the specs on a simliar car, but my spanish is not that good and it seems to aviable in latin America.
Anyway, yeah your car probably doesn't like the real high RPMs mostly because almost all Honda's have breathing problems. If you want a little more kick at high RPM's, get a cold air intake (CAI). You can look around this site for which ones people like the best. Stay away from short ram intakes because they suck hot air in and really don't help much, even though they are cheaper. For your engine, I would look to get stuff directly from Japan, I've ordered parts from here with good luck. They seem to be very knowledgeable, although their English is a bit broken, and they have a good selection of parts. But they will need to know what kind of engine you have, maybe they know what a 1.6ES VTEC is already, and that's all they need. But you can go to this mod shop you spoke of and ask them how much an intake costs and compare that to a couple of Japan shops. Then of course their is always Ebay, they work quite nicely, but you must make sure you are getting a name brand, there is alot of crap on Ebay that can hurt your car.
Intakes are faily simple to put on, if you have a screw driver and ratchet set, you can probably do it yourself.

I just sold my 1996 civic HX on ebay with 212k miles on it for $3500. Yes, $3500. The worst problem it has: passenger window does not work and the spoiler paint is peeling off.
Edit: Screw it link still won't work. Here's my gallery of pics of the car mattlebel.com/modules/Gallery/Civic-for-sale

I went by the kelley blue book value and actually, the car was worth only $2800 according to that... mostly due to mileage and exterior. It was in really good shape, but lots of dings and scratches and it really needed a paint job. So I got more than I expected.
What really sucks is I got stuck with my wife's 2001 escort zx2 and I just traded that in for another civic and that thing with only 60k miles and 5 years newer and in excellent condition was only worth $1000 more than the old civic.

No no no , Why i'm telling that is cause i know for sure it doesn't have any connection to driving skills.
both other drivers were regular drivers and their cars weren't moded or anything.
shift , Doesn't realy work with automatic gear while u need to maintain high speen on uphills.
corner , I told you they have also token me on straight road uphill altough the mazda had better handle and dangerous corvs and i think it was realy dangerous and unstable with my current car settings(belive me) , You can come and try my car our the same road i did if you keep blaming skills and not specs , Again i'm sure the car realy sucked against the others up there.
Make more research before americanize me , thanks.
My SL65 rim, because a rim is all I can afford

Ahhh yes, there is the problem.... you have an auto.... civics are signifgantly slower in auto form compared to manual form.
You know, I really need to have you guys come down sometime. I have no problem with my civic and speed, if I need to move, it moves, no problems. Its not like dad's 05 Accord EX V6, but It does what I need it to.

Honda civic 2001 , 1600ES 4dr , stock parts beside sp sport 490 tires and custum back lights , Perfect condition.
The problem is that as i've made a comperasion to other 1.6 engine or so year 2000+ cars , And mine seems realy slow!
As for an example i couldn't catch up to the follwoing cars during a realy ascending/descending road from tel aviv to jeruslem today:
Ford focus hatchback year 2003 or 2004 , 1600 engine(100 HP)
Mazda 3 year 2005 , Completly stock 1600 engine(105HP)
VW Bora year 2000 or 2001 TDI , 1900 engine(100 HP)
And there's so many more but those above are the most recent..
Even going onto a full therotelle , I stayed behind after a minute or two of a fight...
So i need so explanation since i'm realy realy pissed off!!

So you guys didn't know it's an auto? , Sorry to tell you that only now as it's the only model gear imported ..
And for all of the majority saying that the car takes you from point A to point B , The car is lovely , the car is great on other things.. , I KNOW IT ALL my car is realy good copared to many cars!!! , however i'm just saying that in the road test moment it failed me agaist other cars that may resembled as slower in the same category :/
After consulting some other people from the modding clubs/forums , They said it won't be much effective to work on improving my car's speed and i think ill leave my car as it is , However thank you for the very good lesson Jrfish007!
