Welcome to the psychic car repair forum, where we know exactly what's wrong with your civic with only the vaugest of clues.
So... what gearbox said. Is the check engine light on? Is it a stick or auto? Did you mod it, and if so what? What was the last thing you did before it acted up?
A little splaining please...
And welcome to the forum, too

It doesn't just switch at 5500...
It's INTELLIGENT (not you) VTEC
In this engine it switches from the performance cam to the fuel economy cam based on engine load and RPMs
educate yourself dude http://world.honda.com/CIVIC/1.8li-vtec/

It's a new tranny Honda made for the R series motor. I heard some of the gearing came from the Accord's auto tranny, but that seems a little odd to me

2. It's a stock economy car. 80% of Civic buyers buy it for drivability, livability, economy, and comfort. They are not worried about how loud the exhaust is. Honda engineered it specifically to be quiet just like most cars on the road.

Actually the i-VTEC has an on off point. The VTEC work the same (or simliar) to the previous models. The "i" indicates it can change the cam timing a couple of degrees to help fuel ecconomy and power. The VTEC though still has a specific on/off.
What is interesting is that this guy seems to think the VTEC kicks in above 5,000 RPMs. I am interested to know what car has VTEC kick in that high. My GS-R VTEC kicks in at 4,400 RPMs, and it redlines at 8200 RPM, if a car hits VTEC at 5,000, that would mean the redline would be around 9,000 RPMs. It's a civic, not an S2000.

Yeah, the cam timing is continously vairable, the cam lobe profile is not, just high or low. The day somebody comes up with a continously vairble cam shaft, I'll be very impressed
I test drove one this past week and I liked it. It was EX 5 spd coupe but it definately is not the same as 7th gen. It was smoother, and rode fairly nice but my low profile tires feel more of the road so I couldn't really compare it to anything else. How I miss driving a stick too. If I had to buy any it would be the Si to have any sort of sporty feeling out of the new 8th gen. They wouldn't even let me test drive the one they had which by the way was marked up to 24k (without navi or summer tires) unless i was seriously interested in trading
plus he said only two dealers actually had any Si's in stock (Earnhardt Honda). Although I kind of liked the drive-by-wire throttle system.

THANK YOU for pointing that out. Lets not get all smart and rape the guy who said it kicks in at xrpm for saying something correct, dont think you know it all.
btw rsx-s kicks in at 5800, so I wouldnt see why the new civic wouldnt kick in at 5500, especially since its 'fuel economy based', you wouldnt wanna drive around sub 5K in vtec going to the grocery store now would you?

yes, but more so on a DOHC engine....
this is judging from D16 engines, I am not sure about D17 engine or R18.
I didnt get to test drive 1, only sat in a LX sedan. The dash makes more sense once you get in. The radio controls, fan, AC, etc are a bit slanted as to be only in the drivers direction....
