Some colors more expensive?
My girlfriend was lookin at having my car repainted for me. All the shops she went to said that it would cost more than normal because of the color. the color is jus the stock rallye red. They told her it was a rare color and that it would cost more, and that she would have to drive to another city just to get it done. has anyone else run into anythign like this?

ok, why don't YOU go into the shop. you know how they like to rip girls off. damn. i mean i could say that about anything to a girl and she would believe me.
"btw, its gonna be 20 bucks more cause the flux capacitor is gonna have to be resized to fit the space time continium." " o really. thats fine, how long do you think it will be" " o about 2 months" - cause shes a chick
if it was you it would be more like this "hey, paint my car bitch" "yes sir!!" "i want it ready within 2 days" "you got it!"
go get your own quotes. go with her when she pays. pretend your doing it till its time to pay up.

yea i should, excpet it was gonna be a gift. she already told them to **** off. watned to charge her almost 700 just to take some small dents out and repaint the car.
Woah paintjob real expensive. I guess its who you know. My car had some damage to the rear winshield and hail dents, so protech in austin replaced my whole body and gave me a new paint job for around 3k. I would say just for primering and paint it was a little under 800, they have to lift the motor out to make everything match perfectly. In the end though it will be worth the money, new paint owns.

red, black, and silvers are some of the hardest paint colors to match because when they fade you can SEE it therefore they have to do alot of blending to make sure it all matches otherwise the newly painted portion will stick out like a sore thumb...

Red is very expensive to paint.. My old car was red and after a deer hit it I needed a new hood and the shop I went to was one of the best in my area. But if you looked at the car at the right angle in the right light you could see the difference between the hood and the fenders.

If you have it painted with Honda Rally Red shouldn't the price be set? The only variable would be labor wouldn't it?

if you dont believe that different colors cost more go buy a quart of each and tell me the price. the guy who did my car got ripped off because he didnt think of the different prices. he basically did all the work labor free because the ralle red costs so much more than he anticipated.

I can almost guarantee you that the shops you went to are planning on mixing the paint to be "close" to rally red. You need to go to a shop that actually has HONDA paint. No mixing, it will already be perfect.

Just so that you know, there is no such thing as a Honda bodyshop. Not one dealership ANYWHERE has one. When I had to get my rear bumper done, I had to go to Rick Hendrick Chevrolet in Charleston and they special ordered Satin Silver Metallic paint to redo the bumper.

working for an autobody/mechanic shop and mixing paint when needed i figure ill chime in.
red is more expensive yes, because much more tints are required. with a white or black for instance you start with a base of white or black, with red you start with a base of a red tint, expensive. although any color with lots of pearl or crystal is more expensive than one without it.
as for the color matching, all colors are had to match, because although your car has a specific paint code, there are variants, such as (more coarse, red, yello, lighter flop, darker, lighter, cleaner etc.) some codes have no variants some have as much as 5! so the key is to match the paint cards variant to the car. then when painting it can come down to the painters knowledge of how paitn works and how to change painting technique for different colors. also most shops that know anything will make insurance pay to blend in parts, if you get hood painted blend the fenders, meaning theyll paint over onto edges and some of other parts and fade it out then reclear it all so youll never see this little difference.
oh and carbonfly, your wrong. ive seen many dealerships that have their very own bodyshops. not like a side shop, like theyre own building theire own guys theire own stuff.
oh and if you guys honestly need to know, ask the guy how much theyre charging you for a pint of the color then tell me the price and the code, ill look up the cost of a pint or quart for ya, as my mixing machine calculates it.

just read more posts, carbonfly, honda does not produce their own paint, ppg and other companies makes it. NO body shops wehter dealerships or not use honda paint, it will be ppg most often. there are things with shelves and shelves of different paint tints in cans with codes on them, in a computer you type in the code and it tells you to get this can and put XXX.X grams in then get this can and put XXX.X grams in then add a hardener catalyst.
also an average cost for a metallic paint (almost allllll cars have metallic paint wether you see it or not rallye red most likely also is) would be around 50-55 bucks a pint, thats lets say a black. the rallye red would only be like 10 bucks more or 15 bucks more.
oh and as for color matching, not all places have the set-up i listed with a computer, some just call a local paint supplies auto body supplies store and they mix it for them and deliver it, the problem is someone at point a cant compare variants to a car at point b so tahts where the problem coms in if the shop doesnt care enough to send out the paint to be re-done if it doesn match.
