how much is a basic paint job?

i have the tan color civic with tan interior and want to paint it a dark blue. how much would a decent paint job be to change my color from tan to a dark mettallic blue. i want to powdercoat my wheels silver and get an r34 kit and then paint it. just wondering on the cost? or any other suggestions for a color that looks good with tan? one shop told me $6,000. i didn't think it was this much?

also if i do the prep work for a color change myself, would it be alot cheaper, as in remove all the interior panels and all the trim, bondo and sand my dents, and any other prep work. If i want to add aftermarket parts that need painting, it shouldn't cost anymore right?(such as cf hood, spoiler, grill, body kit, etc?)

if you can sand the entire car down to bare metal, then yes, you will save some money. have fun sanding a car, though. really, it's fun. so much fun.

a good paintjob should cost around $5000-9000. i've been quoted $8000 for a full car repaint (take everything out of the car, paint the chassis, under the hood, engine bay, behind the dash, under the carpet, etc) so $6000 isn't that bad. just make sure they do good work

my friend can paint ur car for 2000 or so...depending on how u want it painted...

the 2000 is for door jams, door inside and out, taking the fenders off, quarter panel windows off, bumpers off, or if u get aftermarket it doesnt make a difference, headlights off, etc...

also when u paint a car you dont have to strip it to bare metal...doing that is a waste of time espcecially if u have no damage on the vehicle
to do a whole car u need to sand everything down with 320 grit on a DA sander or u can wetsand everything with 600 grit to get rid of the clearcoat shine so it has no more luster, and paint is dull... dont forget the door jambs, etc...

Does your friend paint compact trucks? I am trying to find someone to do a PROPER job on my 85 720 truck. I love that truck, but no one wants to paint it cause it's "old". And I am prepared to pay for good work.

Thought I'd ask, since you're in LA as well.

I would go with you. What you say makes more sense, and I wouldn't want to pay more than the car is worth for a paint job.

Well you want to do a total color change. Thats gonna cost a hell of a lot more and I wouldn't consider it basic. Its not like redoing a silver car silver again. Thats basic. Your tan car in a different shade of tan is basic. Total color changes done right are expensive. I mean... a Maaco job is what $250? But they do **** for prepwork. I'd think $2-3K for a re-do is about right, so $4 for effectively doing over the whole car in another color makes sense. Its a big pain in the *** and a lot of work. Bare metal is not necessary, in fact its probably stupid cuz you'd pull the undercoat off. No clearcoat is all you need, but there's so much disassembly involved to completely change the color of everything.

How about this option...

Sell your civic and buy a brand new blue one. Same or less money spent, got the color you want, and a new car.
