Accident Alert

Was in the chat earlier today, when I heard the sound of two cars hiting eachother outside. Looked outside my office, and saw a red civic pulling out away from my car. Stupid woman tried to paralel park the opposite way in a spot in our lot and took off about a third of my bumper. Theres mainly just a bunch of scratches and dents on it now, that I haved it duct taped back on, but this sucks. Got out there and an old woman kept saying Im sorry I didnt think I was that close. WTF, old people shouldnt be driving w/out a special liscence that says they can see ok.

I really think they should re-test older drivers. Statistically, they amount for the majority of accidents, are frequently inattentive, etc. I would tell her that you want a new bumper, and in the event she does not want to pay for it, you can contact her insurance carrier, or get the bumper yourself and then sue her in small claims court for the cost of it.

Actually, I think the statistics point to the 16-25 year old age group as the most dangerous... as reflected in insurance rates.

Having said that, and as one of the oldest members here, I do agree that some sort of re-testing of older drivers is necessary. I would support something similar to this:

All license holders past the age of 65 must be re-certified every three years in order to renew their license. The certification would include an eye test and road exam.

Actually, the statistics do point to older people being worse drivers. If you compare the amount of accidents per age group to the amount of drivers in that age group older people cause more accidents per driver.

Being in police work, I can't tell you how many times I pull elderly people over who constantly come to a full stop in traffic for no reason, don't look for oncoming traffic when merging onto a roadway, travel at an arbitrary speed, say, 8 MPH in a 45 zone, the list goes on. From what I understand, the statistics, at least in New York State show that there is a correlation between older drivers and frequency of accidents. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how or if re-testing procedures can ever be implemented effectively. California tried to do it a few years ago and was met by heavy opposition by the AARP claiming it was discriminatory. Both California and New York responded to this by requiring all drivers to take a vision test every eight years, however I don't think that cuts it.

BAH thats just because from 16-18 the parents force them to report the accident, then from 18-25 they slowly learn not to, old people hit things and don't pay for it or contact their insurance.

That seems like a good reason to me anyway

All roads should be at least 2, if not 3 lanes also

1 lane for everyone over 60, becuase they ALWAYS either A) drive 2mph under the speed limit(or the same speed as the car in the opposing lane) in the fast lane and don't realize there are 30+ cars lined up behind them cuz they are not paying attention or B) Driving the speedlimit in the slow lane and as you come by doing say 10-15 over esp on the interstate they decide its time to pass the person in front of them and merge over 10 ft in front of you without any kind of turn signal

ARRRGGGGHHHHHHHH

I recently rode with my grandma for about a 20 mile drive, we were in the slow lane going the GD speedlimit and every SINGLE person that passed us no matter if they were going 1mph faster than us she would go "Look at this idiot over here, speedin on like there's a fire or something, there gonna get pulled over I tell ya!!" (and yes she talks like that) and she gets angry too!! the odacity!!! she gets mad when people pass her!!!

sorry had to vent. hehehe Id hate to think what she would think if she saw me drive....

So, people are still getting their Civics hit, (or people are hitting their Civics). Anyways, my accident happened in the middle of January. Here's what I can tell you:

This is the worse time to get into a car accidents. I hope you can find a body shop that won't make you wait some time to get your car fixed, especially if your Civic is your only transportation. My car, this Saturday (today in some areas, tomorrow on my side of the earth right about this time) FINALLY gets it's work done in the body shop and I had to wait like 2 weeks. Some shops had to make me wait for 3 weeks. I dunno where you live but that's how it is around here so good fortune for the repair of your car and perhaps you can get something more out of it.

sorry to hear about your bumper, that's sucks

I'm going to have to agree with Northern,
elders that still drive should be re-tested every so often.

I have a very close call the other day with a old woman in an old oldsmobile

i don't want to get started in old people driving, but let me just say that if that damn lady that killed my old car saw the green turn arrow that doesn't exist, she shouldn't be driving.
