im thinking of buying a Civic
im thinking of buying a Civic
Im buying this mainly to get some decent gas mileage.
Its a 1998 Honda Civic DX, 2 door. Its got some scratches/nicks/scrapes. It also has an 'aftermarket' exhaust. It has 75,000 miles, and the asking price is 4200$ what do you think ? the engine in it is the (D16Y7 1.6 16VSOHC) right?
any comments/suggestions would be great. Oh and it comes with a
rebuilt title. what should i be watching for here.

well with a rebuilt title, that means that the car was totalled out at some point. If it was in an accident, depending on the severity, the frame could even be bent. If its got an "aftermarket exhaust" then most likely whoever had it before thought it was a race car and drove it pretty hard, most likely explaining the rebuilt title. I try not to buy cars that appear to have any modification because that usually means it wasnt just a daily driver and there is no telling what else they took off before you bought it.

Yeah the car is kinda wierd though, i was told it has aftermarket exhaust, but the muffler/pipe looks rusted and factory. It might be that just part of the piping was replaced, which seems kinda non-racey.
DONT BUY IT. find another car. thats a total rip off. unless it comes with a buy one get one free deal. i can a 98 civic ex witch is alot better with 17 inch chrome wheels on it with brand new tires for 3,000$

That's a horrible deal. Its an HX model which has no bells and wissles. It has a rebuilt title which means it was totalled and to top it off it has high mileage. If you give me your zip code I can help you find a much better civic.
Everyone its a DX model.
Oh and why is this such a horrible deal. The car has 75k miles, and only has cosmetic flaws?
Im in michigan, 48309
Thanks in advance

yeah i wouldn't buy it either. for it being a rebuilt title, $4200 is way too much for that car.
any civic should get you decent gas mileage, and would be an economical purchase from any standpoint. I'd suggest a 99-2000 civic for you.

1. rebuilt title. you have NO IDEA what happened to this car previously. nor what kind of frame damage *could* have been done.
2. they are asking too much money for something that has a rebuilt title. you could get a 98-99 DX with a CLEAR title for that much.
alright well i've only got 4-5k to spend, and im looking for something with less than 100k miles. preferably something with obd2 i.e. 98+ ? and a 5speed, and im looking to spend between 4-5k
thanks
thanks

Don't buy a rebuilt car. You can do better for the same or less money. Any civic will get pretty good mileage unless you drive with a lead foot.
Okay i keep hearing that i could find a Civic for much less, however i've scoured ebay for weeks, i've checked auto trader sites, and looked threw the local car magasines. Nothing. soo.. could someone help me find one ?

try ebay. local listings there can give you cars within a certain mileage radius.
also try a dealership or the classifieds. what you're looking for shouldn't be too difficult to find for the price you want.

i've called dealerships, they all say that what i want is out of my range. this is basicaly what i told them i was looking for:
1998+ Honda Civic
5speed
Any Model / Engine
less than 100,000 miles
Every dealership said that this was out of my range, by a minimum of like 2,000$

Are you willing to drive a little bit to get one, I have some good sources here in Ohio?
Here is a quick low down on civics:
1. For MPG, you want an HX, highway you will get at least 40MPG, my aunt gets 50MPG highway driving like grandma. But these are learn burn cars that light and geared for high MPG.
2. Problem with HX, they are kind of rare and hard to find, generally don't have AC (it's part of the weight saving thing to help MPG), so you may have to wait for a good one to surface, then jump on it.
3.The DX isn't bad on gas either, although a tad less powerful, it's wieght weight and uncomplicated powertrain make it pretty good for MPG, I averaged 39MPG 50%city 50% highway with both my old DX's.
4. Higher models like the EX have more options, while they will get 30+ mpg, you can do better.
5. Any car/truck/suv after '96 has OBDII system.
Also, stay away from rebuilds unless you know why it was rebuilt.
Anyway, let me know if you are willing to travel to Ohio, I can find some good deals down here.

You should be considering a Corolla also.

Take your time if you're not in a hurry. There are good deals to be had. I bought my 02 civic ex coupe auto (salvage, rear quarter panel/trunk was destroyed) for 4800. I found it on ebay with a starting bid of 6k, it probably would have sold for more and offered the guy 4800 cash after my test drive. He bit and I bought the car. The trunk has a small gap in it when it closes however water does not get in when it rains. He had a busted rear tire ($250 cuz i didn't want mis-macthing tires) and a crack in the windshield ($120) that i had to replace. If you looked at the car from the front it looks flawless. It's okay to look on ebay, don't worry about buying from ebay. If you find something you like, ask for a test drive and if you like it, make them an offer. Chances are they'll take it. Carry cash if you can. I've bought 2 cars like this and well below what it's actually worth. Try to sell them on the idea that hey..."i can take the car off of your hand right now, you don't wanna deal with ebay people (a lot of non-paying bidders) or the ebay fees. blah blah." Good luck.

there ya go. there are some that are around 90k for around 4200. check around. and if its a couple thousand above what your looking for you could always finance something. youd pay like 100 bucks a month for a year maybe. have fun and good luck. and if you can't find the year your looking for, compromise a little bit.

Yeah, I've had many Honda's with over 200,000 miles on them that ran very strong (probably becasue half the body rusted away) but still ran good. Point is a 2002 with 100K miles may not be bad, if it was the righyt price I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
also check your local listings like www.craigslist.org
with 4-5g, im sure you will get an 98+ 5 speed civic under 100k. take your time, never be in a hurry.
