driving fast in a straightline isn't racing. Drag racing is about fast cars, if a driver can't shift optimally its a driver incomptency. To road race you have to be able to shift on the money every time among other things. Its a lot more difficult to learn to push the car to the limits of adheision than it is to press a clutch and upshift.
