side project or turbo???
ok me and my uncle were talkin today, and i decided i am going to either save up some money and get a turbo since i have $3000 right now but i have to pay insurance soon, but yea, save and get a turbo or get an older volkswagen super beetle and fix it up as a project car and keep my civic how it is as a daily driver, i really cant decide, i want both but cant because of my high school student budget, if i go turbo, my friend can get me parts for cheap b/c he owns a store, he hooked my other friend up with a custom turbo kit for $1400, so im thinkin around $2000 being tuned and everything, because me and my uncle can install it ourselves, please help me out with your opinions and whatnot, and if anyone can recomend another project car instead, although i love old vw bugs, reccommendations will be welcomed, thanks

if you cant answer these questions off hand, than a turbo system is not the best idea.
How does the turbo work? How does a turbo stay lubricated? What pieces of the intake, and exhaust need to be removed? What does an intercooler do? How does turbo size and intercooler size affect boost lag? What does a wastegate do, what does a blow off valve do?
If you know then dont answer. you just seem unsure of the topic.
The point is if you don't understand a turbo system in and out then you won't understand how it affects the engine, transmission, and other parts of the car. You can do alot of damage.

learn how an engine works. then a turbo charger. then look at some other stuff also under the auto section. you may need a better knowledge base if you want to do this safely! Good luck either way!

i know what it is, im only gonna run 5 psi to be safe until i build up the internals and do suspension work so it can handle more psi, and for everything that i dont know, thats what my unlce is for, the only thing i dont know is how the intercooler size affects boost lag

right now i have $3000 exactly saved up
but after insurance bill comes, il figure out how long it will take me to save up and whatnot

my turbo is in the works now..and all I have to say is that it's NOT what it seems. It is costing more and more money on things that I never even THOUGHT about needing before I started putting my kit together. Id say boost your civic, and leave it at that. I personally would start a side project before I did internal work on my car. Simply because the amount of money spent on my whimpy SOHC D17 would translate into better gains on another car.

if I had a budget for performance (i dont even have $ for food) I'd get 1) on old 240sx and turbo the stock motor 2) get an old rx-7 and swap in a small block chevy or 3) get an old miata and strip the heck out of it and build the suspension. IMHO anything older than 15 years or FWD is really bad to mod on a budget.

kenwood amps are known to go out. Try another amp if one is around. I had to by a new amp myself... My old one was kenwood... and my new one is also kenwood. But this time, I got the 4 year service plan.
