Hmmm.. what car should it be!?

I'm asking for some opinions (or experiences) about these three cars that I'm interested in. I'm already doing research of my own, but I'd like someone elses. They're fairly cheap and not high in mileage. This would be my first car purchase, and I could afford to finance one of these.

I'm not really looking to mod or toy around with it. I just want a car. I'm tired of taking buses everywhere and I want to help my mom out since she can't drive.

if the Alero's have the 3.4 V6, be weary of Lower Intake Manifold leaks. They are infamous for them. I had an 02 Grand Am with the same exact engine (3.4 V6) and it had a leaking LIM before it was totalled. I dont know much about the 2.4 and 2.2 Ecotecs that are also available for the Alero, except that the 2.2 gets good gas mileage, is pretty well-built, and can take a healthy boosting. They seem to last longer than the 3.4 too.

check out http://n-body.net/ or http://aleromod.com/ for more info on the alero.

hope that helps a lil

My sister has an 01 Cougar, first ford that I've thought was decent, she's got a V6 in hers and an auto, gas isnt the greatest and its not as fast as you'd think a small car with a V6 would be, but its not that bad, you could probably get a civic for around the same price, you looked at 01 civics around your area ?

I take it Ford owns Merc?

I'll take a look at the local honda dealership at their used cars. I was eyeing up the accords, looking good!

Yeap, Mercurys are Fords, if those are your only choices i'd go with the cougar, like i said, its not that bad, definately sportier than the other two cars your looking at.

yes its a ford BUT the motor is not. the motor is a Mazda powerplant. the 99-02 Cougar was to replace the Probe which died off in 97. the Cougar org came with a I4 a V6 but killed off the I4 like 2 weeks into production.

The engine is a version of the DURATEC V6 that fords uses, and since ford also owns Mazda, yes, the mazda 6 will have a different version of the DURATEC engine, they also put those V6's on the Taurus and Escapes and such, of course they are different versions but its the same DURATEC platform for the engine.

10 grand for an 01 cougar?!? get the hell outta here. get an 01 civic for less. you'll have a lot less problems, and the resale value will hold up much better over time.

why don't you consider a japanese car like a civic, corolla or even a accord? they would much more reliable and fuel efficient than american models
