what is the most efficient cruising speed?

Hey guys,

forgive me if this has been covered before..

What is the most efficient highway cruising speed you have all found on your civics? I will be taking some fairly lengthy trips in my car and would like to know how to get top efficiency.

I read somewhere that you get the most efficiency by keeping your engine at the rpm in which it produces peak torque. But according to what I have seen on the honda owner's site the peak torque for my 05 EX is at about 4800 rpm.....somehow that doesn't seem right.

so what do you all think? You guys are the experts.

thanks

Big Rob has a little shameless behaviour in the past
By rule, 55 mph is the universal speed for any car (with the air conditioner on) if you don't know the most efficient. I'm not sure the exact speed, but I'm sure that it is around there.

I read from a report mentioned that the most efficient speed would be 60-65 mile/hour on highway.

I don't believe you can drive 50 on highway without pissing other people off.

Anything below 2700ish rpm is perfectly fine for cruising. But if you are looking for the best gas milage you can possibly get, always set cruise control. The computer will never use more gas then it needs to maintain speed, unlike a heavy foot.

Cruse control kills my gas mileage when there are big hills. Going up some hills it opens the throttle all the way. I was told that if u accelerate going down hills and using very light throttle going up hills, u use the least amount of gas. It works on my moms Yukon cuz last time i drove it I averaged 18.3 mpg compared to her 12.

i heard 45-50 mph was the most fuel efficient. cruise control at that speed and you'll probably hit 40 mpg haha.
