Hemi's were built for one thing... go fast at WOT, no one tuned for turns then. The people who ordered Hemi's were not planning using it as a fmaily car and wheren't planning on driving aorund town going 25 MPH in it.
This guy seems to really have something agianst Dodge, maybe he bought an SRT-4?

actually, the D17 has a BETTER than hemi design called a pent-roof chamber.
First you have the Hemi, I mean this is a stupid marketing strategy to begin with. Who the hell would want to buy a new car with 30 year old technology. But here you have dodge all happy that "Its got a Hemi". Maybe if all the Hemi owners knew that they are still light years behind...well damn near every Europen and Japanese car, they wouldn't be so quick to spout off about having a Hemi. And then you have Ford wanting a cookie that its putting 3 valve heads in its SUV's. Woohoo you've finally catching up with the rest of the world. YAY

haha, that's funny. I agree about domestics being behind in tech, but you have to remember. most domestic motors are built to take more abuse. abuse as in not taking care of oil changes and other services that are important. a japanese motor doesn't hold up as well as domestics do against user neglect. and the majority of americans don't know what an oil change is....lol japanese car makers design engines knowing that if you have a car over there, u'll take care of it cause they're so expensive. In other words, Americans as a whole are stupid. I'm not talking about you guys, cause people that mods cars usually care about their car. why else would you be on a forum to find out more about it? you guys get what I'm saying right?

hemi has become more than just a head design. it now largely references the old famous mopar muscle motors, which are sought after due to rarity and power output. new hemis just play off the appeal of the old engine, but its still worth boasting with 340 hp, and from personal experience you can really haul *** on the highway while carrying hella crap

They use fewwer valves becasue they are trying to create more torque to move the heavy **** SUV's and trucks. The 2 valve (or sometimes 3 valve) desgn is used to keep air velocity up at low RPMs, hence you get more power at low RPMs, but suffer greatly at your top end.
Heres a comparision of a 2001 Mustang GT and a 2003 Mach 1, the GT has a 2 valve head while the Mach 1 has the 4 valve head
As you can see in the lower RPMs they make the same torque, while in the upper RPMs the Mach 1 not only makes alot more horsepower but also continues to make torque.

True you can do it, but what kind of SUV/truck needs high end hp without torque? In both figures, the torque drops off quickly after 4,500-5,000 RPMs. Without that torque you are not going to be able to push that 5,000 lb SUV/truck down the road. In fatc the ZR-1 vette is even better example than the Mach 1. But those are sports cars, not SUV/Trucks.
I have the 3V 5.4L in my F-150, and I can tell you, while that engine can rev to 6,500 RPMs, after 5500, it's worthless in my 5,600 lb truck. In a large vehicle, no torque=no go, so why rev above 5270rpms, after that torque just dyes.
Conversely you say the same about Honda. They only use a 4 valve head while VW/Audi has a 5 valve head that's been out for what 4-5 years now? True that's not as bad as 2 valve versus 4 valve case that's been around alot longer.
I do agree domestic is behind in the tech field, but you have to look at what they are doing, who they are selling to, and will it help them. In the case of a big SUV/Truck, high end horse doesn't help if you don't have any torque. Different goals, different engines.

Diesel engine are expensive, and most bigger SUV's you can get a diesel, Excursion, Suburban, larger truck, all have deisle engines if you want to cuagh the extra $5k for it. Both Ford and Chevy are suppose to be comming out with V6 diesels for their light weight trucks too.
But no, I'm not saying torque is the only thing that matters, but it plays a much bigger role when the car/truck/suv starts becoming heavier and heavier.

Today's hemi isnt even a real hemi. It's like a split between true Hemi and pentroof design. The combustion chamber isnt really any different than our Civics or even a Taurus. Its just a nameplate to help boost sales. A gimmick

edit: might i add that our civics have 10k mile maintence intervals. i dont see domestics telling the car owners that yet.

My moms Oddessy only says to go 7,500 at "normal" conditions. 5,000 under severe conditions.
