Semis have alot of power enough to pull a **** load of weight. Well I have always wondered just how fast they are without trailers??? If every 200lbs =10or so hp then what about 10000 lbs?? That would make them fast as hell without trailers. Someone has to know the answer
i saw somethin on tv where they had a meet and drag raced. i'm talking full cab rigs, souped up suspension, upgraded turbo diesel and such. they ran 14's. the engines are powerful, but 3-400 horsepower typically. what they do have plenty of is torque. and keep in mind they have like...12 gears.
Its all about torque and gearing. They are not geared to be fast, and the engines are made to produce huge amounts of torque, but they typically don't produce huge amounts of horspower. For instance, I looked at a Volvo truck engine and its rated at 465 HP, and an astronomical 1650 lb ft of torque.

right, low hp.....but high tq with low gearing.
My dad's dumptruck is a 350 cummins and a 8spd......his Diamond Reo tractor is a 300 detroit.
They get like 4 mpg

that sentence is so vague, i'm not surprised it came from a magazine.
when you are comparing cars, you can get a VERY rough estimate of their 1/4 mile performance from HORSEPOWER and WEIGHT. again, this is a VERY rough estimate since there's so much more to it than that.
comparing torque numbers is completely useless.

yeah i remember being on one of their sites once..forget which but 1200 ft-lbs torque with only 300 horsepower. They rev very low for huge torque and with alot of gears they can pull most anything.
Plus you can have a civic with 1000 horsepower but if its geared for something completly different...say full torque across all gears then top speed on a 6 speed would be almost nothing and horsepower wouldnt matter do to poor gearing for racing.

dude my buddy owns a farm and all their tractors are only like 4cyls and stuff, i asked thim how they could pull so much stuff, its all about gearing, think of a 10 speed bike. the biggest front sprocket and biggest rear sprocket makes for less revolutions, faster speed, and with the smallest sprockets, your peddling you ***** off and aint goin no where
If a tractor-trailer could rev to 8000 RPM, they'd kick the living **** out of everything else on the road... of course, this would result in a much greater "horsepower" figure, since it is based primarily on RPM.
A typical tractor trailer can rev to only some-odd 3500 RPM.

they arent as high in hp as they are in ft/lb of torque cus thats what they need most importantly. they are in no way fast because the gearing is such a low gear in the rear end. i think similiar to what youd find in a rock crawler thats why thye have so many gears. i dont think they rev up to 3500 or so its got to be higher. either way the fast ones have jet engines on the back. a scaled down version of these is a hummer h1 it is a perfect example of how they work... high torque low hp and low gearing. with a low top speed. the h1 tops at 70mph.

not all of them are fast, but have you ever seen one spin all 4 tires while doing a long *** donut? i have. i watch something on discovery channel and it had all kinda of cool ****. there i this one that does over 200mph on the salt flats powered by 4 turbos and 2 superchargers. hell the when talkin about hp and tg the cfi red racer has 1200 hp and 3500tg and has a euro-type 5-speed ecomat automatic transmission. i
