5spd Drivers...What is Your Preference in Park?
On a hill: Put it in neutral and pull the ebrake, then let the brake pedal go to let the ebrake catch the car on the hill. Shut off car, then put in first. I do it this way so i'm sure the ebrake is holding on the hill FIRST instead of the gear holding me on the hill. Letting your gear hold you on the hill is bad for your tranny; this is why autos go out earlier than they should.
For auto tranny I suggest this: drop it in neutral, pull ebrake, let brake pedal go, then drop it in park. This will extend the life of your tranny so much. Most ppl in autos put in park, pull ebrake, and then let off brake. On a hill, chances are the tranny is holding the car on the hill while the ebrake is doing nothing and acting as the safety net. It should be the other way around. Let the ebrake do its job, and if the the ebrake ever fails, THEN the tranny can stop the car.
With auto or a stick, letting the car sit on the tranny puts more wear and tear on your tranny (more so than you think) than letting the ebrake do its job!
Hope this was informative.

i put mine on Reverse and Ebrake... it's on the hand book, if you leave your car stored for a long time, it was suggested to put it on Reverse and Ebrake...
i just put it on Reverse anyway, coz I still have that tendency to forget that i'm on gear and let the clutch off and jerks about a foot or two forward
and i hit a wall once
but not to the point that it damaged anythin...

Reverse no brake!
If you ever had a Saab, its always reverse!
If you ever had the junkers I drove, you don't put on e-brke because it wount release!
FYI - Parking a car in gear on a hill has no effect on the transmission!

I'll park it, put it in neutral, pull the ebrake and then put it in first and turn the car off while its in first. Downhill in reserve like many others, dont want the car taking off on you!
neutral and ebrake.
neutral because i have a bad habbit of popping the clutch right after i start and thus stalling if its in gear. i dont worry about ebrake issues, even on hills. by law your ebrake is rated to hold the weight of your car + a little force on a pretty significant grade.

Depends on what i've been doing with the car...
If Its normal street driving, its... Park, e-Brake, Leave it in gear.....(incase the e-Brake fails, the car still isnt going to roll away)
If I just finished a run (Autocross, or a nice hard drive) it goes, Park, Engine off, leave it in gear. The reason for this is that if the brakes are really hot and you use the e-Brake... you'll end up heat soaking the drums and cracking them.

I'm in Edmonton Alberta and that's exactly what happened to me. Took it to the shop to have the windows tinted, got the car back in neutral and ebrake on.....ABS light wouldn't go out for 10 mins cause the ebrake wouldn't disengage at the wheels....about -35 C that day....not the car's fault though, the shop washed the car at -35 C and left it outside..what did they think was gonna happen???

It might not affect a standard as much, but it sure does a lot to an auto. Ever been in an auto where they put it in drive and it went into gear like a tank?? Anyhow, even tho this is bound to happen, by not letting your car sit on the gear you can prolong the life of your tranny. Mechanics have told me it could prolong it considerably in an auto depending on how often your car is parked on a hill and you let the gear stop you. I'm not a mechanic (I do have general knowledge and do my own work), but my father worked as a mechanic and his best friend was a helicopter mechanic and both of them use the ebrake as the main catch then the gear as a secondary. Also, it just makes sense that putting 2000lbs on your tranny as opposed to 0lbs is worse for your tranny. There's a reason why they put ebrakes on cars, so use them for what they were designed for and let the tranny act as a secondary net.

Think about it, guy with turbos or spray dump the clutch at like 6000 rpms, and the tranny just keeps going! (he he- axels don"t)
Each and ever time you shift you put a great strain on the tranny!
I mean you are right, it does put a strain on it,but so very small compared to other things that it makes no diff!
I bet we can make thread this last till 06
I leave it in first gear with the e-brake. Just to make sure my car is there when I get back. At Honda I was told just to put it in first gear, no e-brake. Basically because soem people have real strange e-brakes.

Wish I had a Turbo
