does honda/acura make a 3 speed manual no clutch tranny. I have grown up my whole life around muscle cars and am new to this import thing. So this could possibly be a dumb *** question. Sorry

why would you want a 3 speed manual tranny? The power range would blow! The gears would need to be bigger and take longer to get into higher rpm's and where out power is its in higher rpms so it would be stupid. No clutch would be nice though.
Nothing works better than a Chris except a Honda.

The reason that Honda's have soooooo many gears is because the power is all the way up in the higher rpm's and the cars have to be geared properly to actually get into the powerband.
3 spd? Probably not in the longest time...

well don't crap on him, he is referring to the old muchie trany's in the camoro's or way back when that were bullet proof and produced very good drag times for a stock tranny but it sucked on the highway. it comes down to engine design as stated earlier.

only car that i know of that has recently had a 3 spd auto in it is a chevy cavalier z24 but of course that's domestic but it is a compact. also before anyone who says crap about it my friend has one and it's stock but he kicked my *** when i was stock and most v6 domestic cars like the mustangs and the camaros and can hang with a gt pretty good but then again it is a cavy.

its called a pneumatic shifting(most subies that goes rally racing uses this)...
also there is another clutchless manual called air shifter(mostly on funny cars and drag cars though)
yes, mr2 spyders (01-03) have this as well. It is called SMT as in sequential manual transmission. shift and everything just no clutch. and totally different than "tiptronic" in volvos and such

off-topic but why'd you go from muscle cars to import? and mainly, why the civic? <--- assuming that cause your here on 7thgencivic.com
nooooooooooooo!!!!! (to everyone else's post)
im not sure if im right about this orif you are talking about what im talking about (main poster), but myfriend has a 1987 honda civic with a "hondamatic" transmission. i dunno about it being a 3-speed or a 4-speed but its kinda funky. ok it will never shift automatically (has no shift points), and the shifter looks like an auto today (PRN4321). so you are coming up to a stop, in 3rd gear, you pop it into 2nd, then into 1st. then you start in 1st, then pop it into 2nd, then into 3rd, etc...
gear changes are instant in terms of when you pop it into the next gear. its really wierd but it guess its kind of a manual without the clutch...
then again, its 1987 haha.

"The Hondamatic transmission utilizes variable hydraulic pressure and mechanical torque amplification to provide seamless job-handling power and excellent acceleration. Engine power drives a hydraulic pump. The pump, in turn, drives a hydraulic motor with variable fluid capacity. Utilizing pump and motor pistons and a variable-pitch motor-side swash plate, hydraulic capacity and pressure are varied, producing continuously variable output speed. In addition, torque is increased as output-shaft speed is reduced. "
this was found at the honda site, you can "manualy" shift between 3 gears. d1 is maxium traction, d2 is maxium torque, and d3 is for regular driveing. So essentially this was an early version of its european counter parts.
