I was driving home last night after we just had our most recent snowstorm which dumped a good 6 inches on us. Well, even that late in the day they hadn't plowed, so the road was basically compacted snow and pure ice. I made it through town no problem, so i didn't put on my chains, and I planned on parking at the foot of our drive since it's too steep to drive up.
To do so without pissing off neighbors, I had to go up this steep *** road first so I could back up. Big Mistake.
As soon as I made it to the point where my car would go no farther, I immediately started to drift backwards. My car did a 720 down our road gaining quite a bit of momentum. Needless to say I was freaked out - not for me, but for my poor car. I crashed hard into a snow drift, but thank god, no damage. As soon as I stopped, I pulled out, with a little difficulty and parked where I thought I wouldn't move so I could put my chains on. Second Mistake.
As soon as I stooped down to put them on (after slipping and falling about 5 times in my work shoes), I heard the crack of ice and there goes my car with trunk and door wide open. It figured that it was sliding down the hill, heading right for my neigboor's restored 67' Malibu. I was expecting the worst. My car was on a direct colission course with a car that was worth more than my life. Thank god for the design of our street. At the last minute, it started drifting to the side and safely hit another snow burm on the other side of the street.
So yeah, I learned a few lessons on driving in the snow last night, but that's what happens. Needless to say I was able to get home after that, no problem. But damn, I hate snow with a passion.
Anything like this happen to anyone here?

Yeah i know what you mean Grumble. Was driving up there to Mt High like 3 weeks ago and the road was ice. I was driving our 87 Dodge caravan and had to drive 15 mph so i wouldn't start sliding. When i started heading home around 11 AM, there was a lowered accord stuck in the middle of the road by the church causing a HUGE backup. A couple hundred feet down the road was a Toyota Tundra spinning it's tires in slush with 2 of his friends pushing from behind trying to get out.
Learned my lesson...won't be driving up to the mountains the day after a snow storm blows through.

The problem is we have so many people come up here who have no clue how to drive in the snow. I watched an laughed today as some dumbass in a 1500 hit this downhill turn which had a bunch of compacted snow all in the corner. She hit it way too fast and broke too hard, and of course spun out. It was halarious for me to see the terrified look on her face. Why are people so retarded? They think that just because they have these big *** trucks they can drive freely on the snow. I mean, don't get me wrong, what i did was stupid, but what can i say?

last year in vermont we had like an ice storm and i was trying to go up a dirt road with my vic it has studded snow tires so it can get around most anything but this hill was just to steep and icy so i head back down get the old suburban out and drive back up the hill make it and see that it is extremely icy on the way down i just put it in the lowest gear and coasted down because i spotted trucks in the ditches and they were out of staters. Stupid people who think they could go anywhere because they have a truck. Slow and steady made it a safe trip for me.
I dont mean to laugh or anything but damn that was fkin funny. I know how you feel though ... where im from we get on avg 260inches of snow per year or something to that level. I've seen it all but picturing you outside watchin your car slide away with chains in had is too funny
