Unless you are doing rally, a Drift, as you describe it, is ALLWAYS the slowest way to take a turn (or group of turns for tha matter).

the simpleist definition is to have a cars rear end Sliding out durring a turn. how you get the rear end to rotate is not important, So long as the rear end is sliding. Can a FWD car do this, Sure, No Problem, I can think of 3 ways to get this to happen in a FWD car.
now, for Racing the term Drift or Drifting has a Very different meaning then what Pop Culture has turned it in to. In racing terms, Drift angles are synomus with Slip angles, which deals directly with when a given tire makes its best traction. Simply put, most tires make there best traction at 5-10 Deg off the center axis... what this means is that a Race car when makeing its maximum traction is actualy doing more of a crab walk through a turn. Now, would you describe an F1 car, Takeing a turn, as Drifting??? with in a POP definition it most definitly isnt, but with in the race world it is.
So Like I said, weather or not a FWD can or can not drift depends entirly on your definition of Drift....
BTW, nookiemonster, if you want to see a bunch of FWD cars with oversteer problems, come out to our next autocross.... which is the 13th AND 14th next month... So no excuses this time....

Interesting discussion about drifting. Lately its become very controversal
as to what the definition of it actually is. Im sure you'll find that there are many different thoughts and ideology behind what is considered drifting.
As to hitting up the main topic, I believe FF cars can drift. If you go on a lose definition of drifting, your controlling an uncontrollable turn by shifting the weight of your car and using the traction of your tires to your advantage, however you see it fit. And if so, then a FF car can drift by using the E-Brake or by simply going a ridiculous amount of speed exceeding far what is necessary to take the turn then using a double brake technique + counter steer.
Simply, if you are able to lose tranction in your rear (does not matter if your car has a natural tendency or not) you are able to drift your vehicle.
Flame on me for having tried so , I've taken my 04 lx out and tried the e-braking technique several times. My friends consider it "***-dragging" and I myself do not consider it a drift, but when you throw in lots of pratice, technique, and understanding of how the vehicle operates under the circumstances with the ability to compensate for changes, I consider that drifting on ANY car.
If anyone has watched "Drift Bible,"
Keiichi Tsuchiya (whom I consider a pretty well know figure in the drifting world) uses the E-Brake for drifting, as well as many others do too. Drifting isn't about definitions or limitations b/c of your vehicle type, its about having fun and technique. Many people consider using the E-Brake to drift as mimicking a drift. So my final thought about this discussion is this: "If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then its a duck."
Drifting is for everyone, it doesn't matter what your vehicle is.

^^^ Of course is drifting, PLUS that civic is in front of a Sylvia on a drifting track, on a drifting competition, so DONT TELL IT AINT DRIFTING CAUSE IT IS!
That driver has skills, not easy to drift on FF, but yes, that's drifting.

^exactly... ff wont keep up with fr, period... you lose speed puttin on the ebrake, its SIMPLE physics. and yea, go embarrass yourself tryin to drift in ff, when youre "pimpin" jolly

You are kinda wrong! I would love to show you the Toyota Altezza (Lexus IS 300) when it where only available on Japan I had a video of that car turbocharged DRIFTING, the driver drifted that car really great, the IS300 is a Front Engine, RWD car, and he DID USED THE E-BRAKE TO DRIFT!! That's part of the process of how to drift, there are corners where you MIGHT NOT NEED IT on a RWD, but he did used and the car drifted great!! On drifting competition speed loss is not a big issue, so keep away your "physics" lessions and wake up, FWD FF cars CAN DRIFT IF DRIVER HAVE GOOD SKILLS.
I'M SO HAPPY I FOUND THE VIDEO!! So look that Front Engine RWD Car drifting using the e-brake!! So this guy could get and take the physics class again.

that car is fuggin sick. watch his front camber lol. lots of guys kick that camber way out to help break traction up front. watch that front fender...a few times it's so low the front wheels actually hit it
