I think the only reason VTEC is so big is cuz Honda was the first.... then came the toyotas VTT-I or what ever.
Also on The EX yea there isnt really a kick. your car does jump from 3000 rpms to 6500 rpms it just does it slowly

I've drive an 02 lx, but I've driven friends' 01 ex and my ex-gfs RSX-S. There is absolutely ZERO difference between the EX and LX, but the type S is fast as hell. Tires squealed into 4th, nearly shat myself. Now I want a K20A3 swap hahaha.

Anyways! Back to the topic! Yeah, Vtec on the D17 is really no biggie, but to those out there in the world that are ignorant to this fact see VTEC and go holy $hit!!! Seriously, like today when i was coming home from campus i was at a stop light in the middle of town and some guy pulls up beside me in a dodge stealth and from all i could tell, intake, rims, springs, and an exhaust. He shouts out, "Ex right!?" So i say yeah! (Shaved the emblems off, that's why he had to ask.) Then he says, "VTEC!?" with this worried look on his face, SERIOUSLY! Then i was again like, yeah! Then he says, "Damn, i was gonna see if you wanted to race but i've been spanked by too many of those this week!" I was like WTF!?
If anyone was gonna get owned it would have been me! He must have been racing H22's, b16's, and k20's i guess. So yeah then a ways down the road he pulls up beside me and gives me a respectable node then turns off onto another road. It was cool. Haha, but whenever he finds out how fast....er i mean slow our engines are he's gonna go

Vtec, or i-vtec, on the k20a3 <RSX base, Civic Si> is weak....it engages at like 2300 on the k20a3 but you dont really notice it...the power spike you notice is at aboot 5k when the second intake runner opens. Before i had my old base i had a 2001 EX and both vtec systems are for economy and emissions, not performance. Now on my k20a2 the i-vtec engages later in the powerband but you can really feel it, and hear it. I'd assume the i-vtec will be the same on the k20z1.
I like you! do you like me?

i know what yall mean. thats all people talk about at my HS. i've gotten to the point where i just nod and agree. i was the new guy at school this year and thats how people came to know me, my car (kinda sad huh?). All i hear is "wow, that thing must fly because of that vtec." lol people seriously think its a turbo or something. i was talking to some idiots about cars and i told them about the turbo i'm going to get and they asked why? i said because i want something faster. and they were like, "but you already have vtec". some people are just hopeless.
I will be honest with about this when I first bought my civic lx in 2002 I even test drove a used 2002 civic ex and honestly I did not feel that much of a difference if even. I know on the older model like 96-2000 you will definately feel the difference because the lx has 106hp and ex 127hp. Our cars are only 12 hp difference. Now on vtec kick in and sound you will only hear it in more powerful cars like the prelude from 1995-discontinued year model and on integras with vtech the civic si from 1999-2000 model. I know my mother's 2003 honda odyssey has the 3.5 vtech v6 and I've heard it from 4k rpm on up with a soft growl.

i think every n/a 4 cylinder i've been in has to be around 3k before it even resembles accelerating fast. i haven't ridden in bigger 4's, like a 2.5L se-r spec-v, but i have owned a 2.5L 6 cylinder and it drove like a 4 cylinder. the engine is just not going to get low end power, and when it finally does get going, that is the vtec you claim to feel. even the type-s motor doesn't pull very hard til 4k +.
i've been driving a mazda 6 for over a week and right between 3 and 3.5k it starts accellerating finally. it honestly drives a lot like an auto civic, just with better cornering and much smoother. if it had a honda badge on it, i might think that was vtec i felt. if it said toyota, i'd claim to feel vvt-i. but i'd be wrong.

to me any type of variable valve timing is idiocy. Its kind of like driving in shitty slow mode and when you hit a certain RPM it puts you in decent horsepower making mode. Why not just make the cam the same spec all around so you dont have to wait for the "allmighty vtec" to kick in so you can win a race in a slow *** honda.

on the topic of VTEC... I have a question to those that have the VAFC-II installled. Since our VTEC engages so low on the RPM band, what happens when we set it to kick in around 5k?? Is that possible with a VAFC-II? If so, can the VTEC be felt?

You can, but the car will be alot slower in the low rpms. All you'll feel is the kick. And it needs to be adjusted. Our vtec is dual activating. Throttle or rpms can change the cam.
