Vtec Craze?
Vtec Craze?
What is the big fuss about it? I see so many different VTEC screen names I might change mine with VTEC in it. I don't get it if someone can explain for me why, just why? My car has VTEC and it's nothing to brag about.

All it does is open up the valves at a certain engine speed allowing more air flow to produce a little extra power.(?) I think. You really don't feel much in our D17 engines with SOHC. VTEC in an Si or an RSX is a big difference with the DOHC. It really isn't that big of a deal with the D17's.

[QUOTE=acjones20]they are all economy VTEC except the JDM Type R and the USDM RSX-s
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!
All Vtec is for economy. it so that when you are putting around the city you are using the least amount of gas and making the least amount of emissions, and when you decide to push it you get that extra power that running Higher lobe cams gives you... If you wanted to get the most power out of your honda, you would simply allways run the High lobe Cam.... (Ever notice that the pro-Drag cars that run Honda engines DONT use Vtec?? they just the High cam.
I would prefer not to have a power spike right in the middle of my power band...

I was excited when I got the ex and it had vtec. I was expecting it to be more like the last model where you could hear it kinda like a supercharger. They fixed the noise for the latest model.

Hahaha, type HS student. You can feel VTEC kick in, in a 7th gen EX. I mean i can feel it in mine. It's nothing like WHOA! I can jsut feel a lil tiny tiny tiny spike in power. Right, nothing to brag about, just saying you can feel a lil' something. Dunno what the big hype is about VTEC names though. People love their cars, VTEC gets them excited. Ya know, whatever floats ur boat

You can't feel D17 vtec. Remember when everyone though it engaged at 4500 rpms and said it was noticable? Then someone did a vtec light, everyone got confused, and finally accept vtec engages at 3k rpms. Now everyone says you can feel that. It's not even what real vtec is about. It's a modified version to give better gas mileage.

just in case you didnt notice, this website is mostly populated with D17 SOHC. Having said that, the VTEC we are referring to is the DOHC. So, your comparison of your F20 VTEC is not fair to be compared. But thank you for sharing your experience tho.
Well I am a H.S. student and i got the EX because I thought it was fun to drive and got great gas mileage. My 1969 camaro was really fast and good looking but it also got bad gas mileage and was very unfomfortable, no a/c in AZ is a crime, so i converted. Kept the car of course (it is a classis). Since I am a typical H.S. student and a noob to the civics and the whole import scene what do you think for me would be the best (I, H, E) for sound and performance. Brand names and models are greatly apprecaited. Thanks for your help.

well vtec is a great technology. i have no clue why we even have it in our ex's. no point for it. but when i test drove my friend's rsx type s, i almost **** my pants. aside from the fact that the car is really fast, as soon as the needle hits about 5500, it flies to 7900 faster than you can see it. i had trouble catching the shifts at first. thats real i-vtec. i guess honda put it on the EX to attract idiots who think its something crazy. not for economy because the LX gets almost if not the same economy as the EX.
vtec is great, my old crx b16a was a killer above 5k rpm, so i was all excited to get a 2001 ex, then i realize its junk-o-econo vtec, oops. i put an intake on expecting the 5k vrooooom and all i got was putt putt putt all the way through, like curiousfish said, only those motors have the super-preformance-o vtec. just my .02! -- Jeremy
