I hate VTEC.....kinda
I think that it is the most misunderstood and played out acronym in automotive history. I think that Valve timing and lift control is great, it increases power and reduces emmisions, but when Honda fed it to the ricers, VTEC became what it is now. I just get tired of people asking how to get more power out of their 7th gen EX VTEC (hint, hint-it doesnt produce any) or the civic Si people talking about it. The previos generation type R and GSR engines were great, but thats gone now (Except in the type S) and we need to get over it. Troy Trepanier's Chevrolet Biscayne was on Rides yesterday. It doesnt have VTEC, but it does have 1400HP and 20MPG on the highway. Thats what "old technology" and 2 huge turbos will do for you.

i hear what youre saying man, VTEC's origional goal was to have power when you need it, and fuel economy when you dont need the power. in essence, the engine always has the power, but when it doesnt have the throttle input/load on the engine/rpm's, etc. then it kind of cuts/regulates/reduces the power so you get more MPG
people who dont know that think that VTEC does something like nitrous, or a turbo, i.e. the motor makes its own power till X rpm, then the VTEC kicks in and MAKES more power. which is not true

If you think about, Displacement on Demand almost seems like an extreme extension of what VTEC's goal was: Mileage when you want it, power when you need it.
Its a reach. But i made it. Thank you.

let ppl belive what they want.... unless youre the type that feels like schooling everyone that doesnt understand VTEC... then you have a lot of schooling to do. But VTEC is a nice thing to have if you have it.

just on a side note....anybody see the show yesterday on speed where they dynoed the guys Prelude? He had a 2000ish lude w/ full black widow kit, rims, system, dressup and he says $80k in the car. He had a header, intake, and some other bolt ons-he pulled 154 to the wheels, i guess its not only the D17 that hates mods.

Only 154 whp?
Was it an auto?
I thought those came with either 195 or 200 hp and with an average of
10% hp loss on a manual that still should be over 154.
That sucks.
I'm not going to modify my engine because I like it the way it is. My car is reliable and quick enough to get me to the speed limit without getting rear ended. Power and fuel economy on demand. If I want to do fast I'll jump on my Honda Nighthawk 750.

Well, at least I don't feel so bad about my mostly stock civic now.
ricers mug me... they think they're bad... then they rev at me at the red light... especially the ones that drive the oooold azz beat up honda, with the duct tape racing stripes, an f-1 spoiler, and "high performance racing exhaust tip" cummon all i did was clear my headlights... does that mean my car is fast too???
oooo and what made my day yesterday was when i went to pick up my brother at his high school... there was a corola parked out front with the Mugen characters in the corner of the back windows... last time i checked, Mugen only made parts for Honda... unless it has expanded to cover Toyota too...
