they are pretty much identical, maybe just a few extra options here and there.. a few costmetic changes like different style hubcaps, etc... but the 2002 should have less problems than the 2001 because the first year of a new model will almost always have a few problems...

hey man, if you have the choice definately:
1. get a manual ! (much more fun to drive!! you control what gear your in, and better gas mileage)
2. get a coupe!

i would go for a 2002 or 2003. you know, before i visited SF i would have said stick, but i saw those hills and i gotta say if you go up those on a regular basis, or cant drive around them, get the automatic. the civic will be struggling as it is with its little engine, you dont even want to worry about rolling back if you miss your shift into 1st or something. i was worried with a v6 rental car that was an auto...trust me. when you live somewhere else go for the 5 speed.

yeah, in SF, I would get an auto, especially if I have to lug ppl around... hell on the clutch. ANd your engine will have to torque so much.... yikes....
yes, bigger displacement cars are easier to drive with stick in most cases.

I dont see any problem with driving stick with lots of hills. only problem is starting on hills, but other than that i'd prefer stick for hills as it wont be constantly hunting for gears, and you can use the extra juice. auto on hills is annoying IMO.
