Car Black Box ....Stupid!!
Check this out, its new to me. Im out on smoke break at work and this girl comes out and is yelling how her husband bout her a black box for her car. Im like what, she said it tracks how many times you brake, your speed, i guess it lowers your car insurance but i can see it screwing you in the long run. First off id never by this thing and 2nd if someone bought one for me id never put it in. Has anyone ever heard of this seems quite rediculous!!

Its allready in the cars. There was a guy who hit a person with his car. Said he tried to stop. They checked the cars computer and at the moment of impact there was no brake application. Manslaughter. The computer registered both impact and whatever was goin on mechanically. Oh, and he was going 40 in a 25 zone. (registered that too.)

I just had a vision of the future:
Black box/gps tracking in all cars automatically debits your bank account whenever you go faster than the speed limit, run a red light or stopsign, don't signal a turn, go the wrong way on a one way street, etc...
Anyone remember that movie Demolition Man?
The whole world is

. A lot of new cars install them standard. A buddy of mine is a prosecutor and tried to get the box in a vehicular homicide case, the judge allowed, the state supreme court overturned the conviction - since he had no idea the box was in his car it was kinda like big brother. I know a lot of states including CA have allowed them, even if the owner didn't know about it.
It's part of the vehicles SRS system and only stores data when you have a crash. However this product http://www.davisnet.com/drive/produc...p_products.asp is used to log data all the time. It's used by rental agencies, parents, fleet owners to determine driving habits. It's also a diagnostic trouble code logger and graphs raw data.
Don't drink and post, you will end up hilarious.

My dad owns a 01 M3 and we talk cars alot.
Anyways awhile back BMW had a problem with the new M3 motors, as im sure you all remember.
When the problem first came up and people were blowing theyre engines BMW suspected that it was people driving the car too hard. Well to the drivers suprise BMW confronted most with a VERY detailed report of theyre driving up until the engine blew. It was later found to be a manufactuering problem but the amount of data BMW supposedly had was suprising.
from what ive been told they could tell you your speed, RPM, throttle %, gas octane, if sport mode was on or not, in a manual trans car they could tell you how hard and fast you were shifting and steering input.

Yeah, the M3s have a black box if I'm not mistaken, it caused quite a bit of controversy.
Rental cars from some companies come equiped too, but in several cases, when they tried to invoice the customer for speeding etc. and were taken to court, the boxes were ruled and invasion of privacy and they weren't required to pay anything. Its a contentious issue, but I have no doubt they'll become more common in the future.
Thankfully though it appears we can rely on the courts to protect whatever privacy we have left.

I wouldn't be suprised if at some point a GPS system was put into cars and depending on the speed limit of a road, your car would immediatly slow and prevent itself from going over the speed limit....I give it...5 years before that is thought of.
Actually they don't have to do that...they have been working on automatic roads for the past few years and a lot of newer cars have navigation systems in them (GPS). The idea is to basically get in your car, tell it where you want to go and it takes you there. Don't have to "drive" in any sense of the word. Although I think this is a great idea for places like LA during rush hour or pretty much anytime you have to get on the 91...Computer would control how many cars get on at any point in time, could put the cars inches apart and maneuver the ones getting on and off the freeways. I really don't see anyone rolling over to an automated speed trap in their cars. Of course...if something major happens where the general public WANTS this type of control...about the same tiem people are willingly being microchipped (whole other issue). Naw, it is technologically feasible to put a system like this together (we actually had a discussion about this back in 2000 on a BMW board) but the general public will not stand for it at this time.

black box?! that sucks! I suppose it's not that bad as long as nobody but the driver gets to see all the stats. I'm glad I didn't decide to go powersliding in the rental car.
