you can use 5w-30 also if they have it. i don't think the 00 accord filter is the same filter, you'll need to get a new one, they're only $5.

It is best to use Mobil 1 0W-20 if you cant get 5W-20. You can use 5W-30 but you should replace it as soon as possible.

heres a quick lesson in the SAE classification system...

when you read the oil, it will have a rating on it, labeled like; SAE 5W-20 for example. the numbers refer to the oil's viscosity or how heavy it is.
the first number (5W in my example) refers to the weight of the oil at ambient air temperature on start up... the oil's thickness when it is just sitting at normal temperature before the engine is started.
the second number (20 in my example) refers to the oil's viscosity at normal operating temperature when the engine is warmed up.
the heavy weight oils, or high viscosity oils, are best for high temperature areas, or race applications. low viscosity is best for cold climates, snow, etc...

hope this helps.

indeed, heavy oil...................

they use heacy oil back in my country, Indonesia......a number like 20W50....they actually use it on a civic..

can you believe that? however, the ambient temperature in my country is always 85-95F..........

they do that in order to "eliminate" the noises from the engine..

my opinion: 0W20 M1 from wal-mart

actually, honda filter's good, right? $15 for 3..........hehe

if your racing and your engine is at high temperature for elongated amounts of time, you don't want oil that is too thin to coat and protect your engine. but you are right, if you are doing normal daily driving, heavy oil isn't good, it doesn't flow through the engine well enough. but for racing applications, heavier oil than that you'd use for normal driving is better.

0w-20 would probably be better since thats what mobil1 suggests using as a 5w-20 substitute.

You only use heavy oil if you want to keep the metal from touching metal in your motor. I use 20w50 in my 10 and 12 sec cars.

when all else fails, RTFM

honda manual says to use 5w-30 if you cannot find 5w-20.

the whole point of motor oil in general is to prevent metal to metal contact..lower viscosities will do this too.

exactly! using a lower viscosity will actually help in daily driving. if you don't drive long enough or hard enough to build up exsessive engine heat, you shouldn't use higher viscosity oils. infact, the oil will be too heavy and will not travel fast enough to safely distribute thoughout the engine. the engine simply will not create enough heat to make the high viscosity oil 'thin out' so to speak. when the engine heats up to operating temperature, it changes the flow ability of the oil, this being why the SAE created multiviscosity motor oils.
if you're heading out to the race track, you might want to bump up to a 30 weight or maybe even 40 weight, depending on the ambient temperature and how long you will be driving.

any recommendations for a driver who just does regular driving but pushes the car hard at times? i would race arandom person couple times but not everyday. i live in cali and weather here is usually hot as of now. im expecting 80-93 degrees pretty soon for summertime.

i've been using 5w-30 mobil 1 and wanted to try something else. so any recommendations?

thanks.

i'd go with probably just 5w-20, but if you can't find that then 5w-30.
