Suprisingly the top car for the class... a little 89 Si that might be putting down 100HP.
in autocross horsepower is over rated. Weight and handling mean a lot more.

Look for Solo2, thats what the SCCA calles Autocross.

let me start by saying that I'm not flaming anyone, just giving an alternate viewpoint (I respect autox drivers very much!). the C5 wasn't really meant for autox -type conditions. If you compare a C5 to an S2000 on an autox course (low-speed tight turns, etc) it will look like the vette is just above the honda in performance, take it to a road course where these were meant to run (with at least a couple of long straights) and the vette will destroy the S2000, it just has so much torque that it loves straights. I doubt that a ferrari would look very much better than a miata on certain autox courses, but take it onto road atlanta and it'll be no contest.

True, on a larger course Hp starts to matter a lot more. But if a car can out brake and out corner the larger HP car, then that extra HP for the straigts doest help all that much. now a C5 vs an s2000 on a roadcours is a pretty good matchup, and it would be a great battle of power Vs finess, with the drivers ultimatly making the most difference... (advantage going to the C5, due to good handling and great power) So the driver of the S2000 would have to signifigantly out drive the C5. BUT. if it were a Z06, then the S2000 Stand very little chance in beating it.
Remember, with Grip racing (Autocross, open track, road racing) the Driver makes more of a difference then the car.

So what can I do to an say an older civic to make it handle better? From what I quickly read of the rules, about all I cna do for handling is put a role cage in to stiffen the chasis up. And put some Falken Azenis on. and I can't run more than 225, which is hard to fit on a civic anyway, but can I run different sizes, like 215 in the front and 205 in the back?

Suspension is pretty open. Heres our setup, suspension wise on our 89Si that we run nationally.
1. Springs, 425 LB/In on all 4 corners, with adjustible pearches.
2. Koni adjustible shocks, Full soft in the front, 3 Klicks above full soft in the rear.
3. front upper tie bar, rear upper tie bar.
4. 24mm adjustible rear anti-roll bar (stock bar on the front)
5. Alignment is crucial for handling!!! 1/16th toe out on the front, with -3 deg Camber on the noes. 1/16th toe in on the back with -2 Deg Camber. when we had the car set with 0 toe on the back it was a great Drift car....
6. Run a set of either Falken Azenis or Kumho MX, 205/50-15 on at least a 15X7" wheel preferably a 15X7.5 (yes it will fit, but just bairly)
I wouldnt put a cage in the thing, it would add more weight then its worth.

Its almost Street prepared, but with out the engine mods, and with out removal of the intirior... so its a low end SP class. Much cheeper, a Fully preped STS car thats nationally compeditive will cost you less then 10,000 (89 Si) but a fully preped street Prepaird car.... My friend ran an 88 CRX si in CSP, total bill for a nationally compeditive car.... 30,000... For car, parts, and tires.
Stock your only allowed Shocks and what ever DOT approved tires you want that fit over stock size wheels.

They had about 5 of them though, and I couldn't dare tell you what color they were, cept the one they sat in their booth, which was orange, and had all kinds of sparco ish in it, but it wasnt raced.

So for stock, I could put aftermarket shocks on the car and DOT approved tires? Will Toyo RA-1's work, or do they still have to have a treadware of 140? And anything else I replace has to be OEM.

Basic rules for stock
ANY DOT tire that will fit on a stock sized wheel (This incluedes Hoosier, Kumho and Toyos "R" compound DOT tires) its Generally accepted that the Hoosiers (tread wear of 40) are the fastest followed by the Kumhos (tread wear of 50)
suspension wise, shocks may be changed to any shock (Konis work well) and the front anti-Roll bar may be changed, thats it.
Engine, you can do a Drop in filter in to the stock box.
