10 dollars more for 5w20?

Got my first oil change today and decided to stick w/ the 5w20 and was charged an additional 10 bucks for not using their standard 10w30. Anyone else have to do this. It was at a percision tune auto care, I dont mind the extra $ but wonder if all places are like this.

Buy the oil at an auto parts store if using dino, and definitely buy a decent oil filter separate from the lube guys (Mobil 1 and K&N are good filters). Then give them both, and you get a discount instead of +10 bucks for extra different oil.
I personally use redline syn and do my own changes... cheaper in the long run... lets do some math...

7.00 x 4 qts of syn oil
10 for a filter
20 bucks for jackstnds and jack.

lets assume we're amortizing the stands over like 4 changes (for me that's about a year). this is assuming a 3K change interval, so its about 43 bucks a change with synthetic oil (For a lube place to give you syn oil its usually +15-20 bucks on their usualy 26 buck fee.)

BUT, since it's syn oil, I can change it every 6K instead of every 3, but I have to change the filter every 3 regardless. so 28/2 is 14... and you need the jack and stands the same # of times, so its about 29 bucks for me to change the oil with syn yourself.

mad, If you want to get your oil changed don't go to any quick lube, jiffy lube, etc type places, you can't trust them, I don't anyway, they may strip your plug, put a garbage filter in , or use quaker state oil!
I change my own oil and use castrol gtx 5w-20 and purolator filter, no probs!
It is a pure rip off for them to be chargin you $10.00 more man, don't ever go there again! 5w-20 costs the same as any other dino grade oil
Before, If I ever didn't do my own oil I would only bring it to the honda dealer, you can get a coupon or special, but at least you know what is happenin to your vic

10 bucks for a filter WOW!

anyways i changed my cars oil today and my sisters eclipse as well.

since its gettin hot now i switched over to 5w30.

i bought...

4 qts of Mobil @ $1.39 each
fram oil filter PH7317 @ $3.26

only thing bad about changing oil in a 7th gen is the location of the oil filter. its hidden soo high up that when u reach for it to loosen it up, the oil runs down your arm.

but i must say doing your own car maintinance is good because if someone else does it they sometimes use crappy oil and filter. also they dont give a damn about your car. they can strip your drain plug, scratch ur paint, jack up ur car wrong, overtighten, loose drain plug, oily steering wheel, dirty carpet, etc..................

one question tho... why are you ppl using synthetic oil in the civic? makes as much sense to me as putting 94 octane into a 1980's ford escort

Using a light weight oil in warm temps and high rpms, you need synthetic. It should be OEM.

detroittosag has a little shameless behaviour in the past
yea i used to get my oil changed, but then i started doing it. i looked under the car, they never gave me a washer for the drain bolt.. they just kept using the same one that came with the car. also yea i do belive that they were stripping the drain bolt as well, but i can say they never charged me no 10 bucks more for my oil. but they did want to put in 4 quarts of oil, until i told them (3 times) that it takes 3.3 quarts instead of 4. but now that i change my own oil, everthing is taken care of, i use 10w30 mobil one syn oil, and yes when i change the oil filter oil does run down my arm like everyone else.. lol
