gettin an AE86?...
if its sr5 you might have a chance, simply swap for a ae92 or 101 motor. the suspension can be tweeked for a stifer more modern tune-up if you used some off the aftermarket. The ae86 has defintely good potential, just got to make sure you got the right stuff to makle it slide.
oh and make sure the tranny is not slippin, you could either fix it, or swap something off a junked ma70, or go a little higher off a zz celica tranny.

DON'T do it, I had an 85 ae86, sr-5 with a 5spd. I could not be happier to get rid of it. I bought it with the same intenions (to hook it up) you know volk wheels, 4ag, dual side draft carbs until I find out how much this little car can cost. Just make sure you have the funds and a awesome mechanic to bail you out

something must be up with it for so cheap. you probably need to strip the entire car and then reinforce everything and while you're at it give it a good paint job. it will be expensive in the longrun.
Dude, I used to be really into them. AE86 is a body code, if it's a GTS, 300 is well worth it, even if it's junk and it runs, you can sell it for more. If it's an sr5, forget it, they're a dime a dozen. The GTS was made from 84-87, the main differences being the gts had 4 wheel disc, a dual overhead cam motor, and lsd. If you are trying to build a drift car, check the welds on the body in the trunk or under the hatch and make sure they are not cracked. Also, it would be best if there was no sun roof for drifting. If you would like to know more, send me a message and I'll get you in touch with some good people. Just to give you an idea, I bought my first 86 for a thousand bucks. It was an ex drifters car, so it was banged up from a few canyons, the bumpers were tie strapped on, and the interior was gone. I put the car up for sale one day in the same condition (I abused it as a drift car myself) for 2g's, and sold it that night. I got at least 20 calls on it the first day.
Everyone watches a damn cartoon and goes nuts over a car. Why don't some of you guys get more involved in auto-x or road racing? Drifting promotes too many illegal activities IMHO...if you do decide to drift just keep it in the sanctioned events on the track.

The one thing I would be warry of is if the thing has been in an accedent. engines can be fixed/swaped, Suspensions can be changed. But if the frame is bent the car aint worth squat...

Wow, petty bickering...anyway, the ae86 has been not just been a cartoon idol in Japan. The car is actually legendary where I come from (oh yeah, I'm japanese) on the track as a race car and a drift car. I agree that drifting should only be attempted at the track. Not only is drifting dangerous to other drivers, but can be extremely hazardous to your health. It's definetely not as easy as it looks. I've been working on it, and just when I though I had it, of course, I crashed....doah! The cool thing about rear wheel drive cars that come with a reasonable power range is that the car can be turned not only with steering, but with throttle control. Anyone who doubts the capabilities of a rear wheel drive car should go out to see professional races.

It may not be an issue (not all Core supports are welded in) but it does tell me that its probably been in a front end collision. so, look at the gaps between the front of the doors and the fenders, Check if they are even. also check the gapping between the hood and the fenders, for the same thing

i hope you weren't caught into the Initial D craze, it takes a good amount of time and not to mention a lot of money to fix one of those up. Yeah sure the car is cheap to begin with but if you everything together it's gonna get ya. If you are caught in that craze i say get a 240 and put a SR20 in it, it will be hell of a lot easier to do that then building an AE86. If it's a GTS for $300 though i would do it just to play around with but make sure nothing is cracked..when you slide your putting a lot of pressure on the chassis.

Besides this, everything is perfect, even w/ the front bumper vs. the headlights.
