Harleys are f-ing loud
i live next to a highway, and every year a huge convoy of cyclists trip to NY somwhere to get their rides blessed or something. For an hour all you hear is "r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r" and an occassional look-at-me "R-R-R-R-R-RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR"
there's no divider so I can hear them coming and when they're passing through. Pretty fun to watch all the different types. Police actually close up the biker's route for them, and don't let the regular traffic through until all the cyclists have passed

doesnt it say in the motorcyclist handbook from dmv, something like dont go within this much distance of any other motorist if your in between or aside from him/her?
"if you're in someone's blind spot you might cause an accident"
^^ not really cause, but increase the risk of an accident
lets say i have the exact sound of one of those loud harleys (its hard, but just imagine it lol), and i get pulled over and the officer tells me my car was loud and its over the 95db limit based on his judgement and issues me a ticket for "modified exhaust" or something?
and dont give me an answer like just pay the ticket n move along or something like that.

Thars great and all that loud exhausts "save lives", but it is your choice to purschase a bike. If you don't feel safe riding a bike with stock exhast, in your area. Then maybe you shouldn't be riding a bike at all.
Ive had countless SUVs try to merge into me, but I don't think that excuse would really hold up in court while Im fighting a modified exhaust ticket.
I think that if a city is going to let one type of vehicle violate the law, and excessively i might add, then no vehicle should be subject to that law

Some of you guys are whiny little pu$$ie$.
I get tickets on my harley too. I pay the fine and don't whine about it. Yeah it's loud. Yeah, loud pipes move people out my way when I split lanes. No one ever moved when I was on the 750. You bet your butt they show a little more respect to the harley.

Do you honestly think your getting respect because you ride a harley?
Maybe theyre moving in an attempt go get away from the god awful sound your making?

harleys are great...mind you ill never ride one before im 40 or 50, but i love the sounds. and yes, loud pipes do save lives! like hawk explained.

so...if the loud pipes scare you or anyone into moving aside, thats what theyre meant for.
[QUOTE=PbFoot]have you considered that maybe its not the biker but the stupid *** drivers that dont know how to use a mirror? QUOTE]
i dont know about that. but if you have sources for that fact, i'd appreciate it. if i were a biker driving down the road with traffic, of course i'd stay away from cars as far as possible aside me. i would never be in a drivers/motorist blind spot at all. even when i drive my car, i just dont want to take that risk and just tapping the brake a little to slow can can save my life/car.
safety first

you want sources? go out on the highway and drive a little. maybe you live in an area where everyones a perfect driver, but over on this coast we have a lot of idiots that think they own the road and no one else matters. these bastards are a danger when im in my car, i cant even imagine how bikers feel about them.
but if you really want a source that bad, heres one for you.

and tapping your brake doesnt work when someone is in front of you.

when i said tapping the brake, that means slowing down to leave a 3 second gap (which is the rules of driving,in dmv handbook) ahead of me for safety reasons.
so you would continue to live and risk your life over their on the roads where the horrible drivers are rather then moving to a different location?
im sorry to hear about bad drivers giving you a hard time but everywhere their are always bad drivers. some do think they own the road and could care less of the others and people like these idiots caused lives and accidents. i live in california where driving conditons are pretty terrible. usually when im driving down a highway, their is always a bike (harley or sports bike) passing between lanes (going in between cars to pass traffic). and by doing this, i gotta move my car to the left to let them thru just so they can squeeze into my lane. i dont have to but i do care about that bikers life so i give alot of room for him/her to squeeze in because i know jackasses out their like to **** with bikers by gettin closer to them. so what makes these bikers think they can squeeze thru lanes panicing drivers? im pretty sure that wasnt in the motorcyclist handbook
if a biker were to follow the rules in the DMV bikers handbook, risk of accidents will be much low.

Factory Harley Exst.
Owning both a harley and a honda ill tell you that harleys DO NOT come from the factory like that, they are actually very quiet but after straight pipes are added is when they get loud. Ive got straight pipes on mine w/ no muffler and have never had a prob with the law.

the majority of bikers DO follow the rules and ride properly, its the drivers that try to run the bikers off the road, you said it yourself. why do they do that? because the bikers arent following the dmv rules?? thats BS! from what someone told me (correct me if im wrong please) about older harleys (i dont know if its the same w/ new ones), since they are air cooled they have to keep moving so as not to overheat. so if theres traffic they cant stop in a lane. thats why they split lanes and cut between cars, so they dont overheat. as far as ive heard, its legal for air-cooled bikes. but i guess as far as car drivers are concerned, NO one can pass them, so they would rather run a biker off the road.
i always thought it was legal in some states like california. thats what the motorcycle saftey course intructor told me and they are the ones that write the book. i know here in VA its illigal for us to cut in between lanes, and with the huge trucks and h2s riding around i wouldnt want to do it anyways! i'm getting tired of riding around this area so lately when i ride its out into the open where i have more room to ride.
i didnt say drivers block the bikers path because the biker isnt following the rules, they do it so they cant get thru and thats not what their suppose to be doing. but its all on the driver, maybe the jerk swerved into the biker because hes showing that cutting in between lanes (mostly when theirs cars aside) is a no-no.
as for the air cooled engines, i've never heard about it. but if its illegal to drive a cooled-air engine on a bike, maybe they shouldn't. of course some still do cuz who really cares. maybe they made it illegal so bikers wouldnt have to risk their bikes by cutting in between lanes and such to keep their bike in shape and good condition <--- an guess.
oh yea, i wasnt saying you should move out because of idiot drivers over their. what i was trying to say was that if your seriously having problems with the driving conditions over their, moving to a different location where motorist are safe (like oregon/washington) would help the risk of you getting into a bike accident. no matter what, where ever you go, their is always gonna be sum idiot motorist breaking the law/rules that can affect other peoples lives and put them in risk (with my expierence). i drove from cali to washington their and back. the drivers over at oregon are real safe on the highway. they all drive 65mph or whatever the limit is. if your on the very left lane, and they see you comming up faster then they are, they will move over to the right lane and let you come thru. <---- too bad california isnt like this

I think you guys took my last post the wrong way.
Personally I was looking at getting a sports bike before I got the Honda. On campus there are numerous advantages to having a bike. You can park right outside the building in bike only designated parking.
However outside of campus there no way in hell I would want to ride that thing around here. People in Lafayette have problems spotting full size sedans much less bikes. Therefore i decided against getting a bike

^sorry to hear about your situation. but its a good thing your not risking your life to ride a nice *** ride. but wouldnt colors of bikes n suits u wear can help? like yellow/black can be more spotted then blue/black.
buy reflectors and put them all over the bike
