Harleys are f-ing loud

I was driving the other day with my window down listening to some music, and a Harley passes me in the lane going the other way and it was SO FREAKING LOUD! Like I got a headache just from him passing me (and remember this was over top of my loud music). wtf? He must have been deaf from riding on that thing. Freaking annoying.

Loud Harleys

You're touched a nerve there. In Wisconsin, we get tickets for having a "non-stock" exhaust system. There is no db limit, just a police officers opinion that your ehaust is not a factory stock unit! The regulations also state that every vehicle...that's EVERY MOTOR VEHICLE must be equiped with a muffler.

Why is it then, that Harleys and Harley wanabes can ride around with straight pipes, no mufflers, and they get a pass?

(sorry for getting off topic)

BUT how are those lifted trucks safely to others? its illegal to lower a car at a certain height here in cali (i believe) and its not illegal to raise a car so dam high that at night, his headlights are basically on your rear view mirror!?

I made that came comment when I got pulled over for having my exhaust. All he did was say "Yours is a modified exhaust, Harley's come with that sounds from the facotry." I was gonna argue, but the guy didn't give me a ticket because during the time while I was pulled over, about 3 more cars drove by with exhaust so he said that he wouldn't give me one because it seems to be a common thing around the area. (Mind you, this was on my way to school and you know how many highschoolers have exhausts.)

Don't be ragging on Harleys - they're awesome machines, and the bumper sticker is correct: loud pipes save lives.

That bull crap about loud bikes save lives. LMAO. Are you kidding me? I mean I know some of the guys raise a lot of money for cancer and stuff, but does that mean I can go around speeding for a blood drive?

The point is they are A LOT louder then our cars, but yet we get the tickets. It's nothing but profiling, because I know most people don't even talk about how loud my car is compared to a damn Harley.

wow.... you really have no idea what that statement means huh? Maybe if you ever rode a bike around public streets you'd know that people seem to not see a bike no matter what you do. I can't even begin to tell you how many times people have almost switched lanes into me. I have honked my horn, waved, yelled, the only way to make the idiots realize your there is to pull in the clutch and rev the hell out of the bike. If your bike is louder than the cars, you have a better chance of people hearing you and not running into you.

Loud pipes save lives = Its our only deffense to keep some of the stupid cagers from hitting us.....thats all.

some of the guys raise a lot of money for cancer and stuff? Gee, with that level of thought I didn't know that Jessica Simpson owned a 7thGen. Rides are organized to benefit all number of causes, like Vest-a-Cop, local PBAs, toy drives for underpriveleged kids at the holidays, and many others that are escaping me now. Even cancer awareness too. I've even seen rides organized to raise money for families of firefighters and cops killed in the line of duty. You might bitch about them giving you loud exhaust tickets, but the reality is that it's a clash of stereotypes...you may well fit the description, but modded Japanese cars are often (around here anyway) driven by punkasses. And guess what? You bitch and sometimes THEY DON'T COME HOME. At least the biker mentality has a space in it to care, unlike the ricer mentality that complains about paying a ticket. And the biggest reason for especially Harley riders doing these rides is the demographic: they're for the most part older (read: affluent) conservative patriotic white guys. The sound of a few hundred Harley exhausts is of such beauty to me that it ranks only second to military jet exhaust...they are, in their own ways, each the sound of freedom. I always look up when I hear a jet engine, and I always drop my windows when I hear Harleys.

And by the way, it's not reputations they're after. They're shockingly like you....someone who takes pride in their machine.

Its all a matter of what you are used to. Me, I hate Harleys and I hate the sound they make... to a point where I roll up my windows when they are next to me.

I also roll my windows up when a ricer pulls up next to me with his buzzing bees farting exhaust.

But I have no problem with a classic V8 reving next to me.

Loud bikes save lives is bullshit. If you need to depend on someone else noticing you in order to save your life, you might as well quit riding. Cuz bang bang, you're dead. Depending on others is never reliable enough for me.

You people are going way the hell off topic. The whole point is that we get tickets for being to loud and they don't. That's great that it saves their lives. I misunderstood the first time. Then they should compensate for the rest of us.

So then explain why we should get tickets and they shouldn't if we are so much alike? Your whole post had nothing to do with that topic.

FYI, a stock Harley's exahust is 80dB, meeting federal regulations. I'd bet that most owners have modified their exahusts and reach 100dB.

I believe that the Canada and US legal limit is 95dB.

In OKlahoma we have noise ordinance laws that state that any sound audible 50 feet away from the vehicle makes that vehicle in violation. That includes the exhaust and stereo.

I have to agree with Hawk on this one. I have plenty of friends that ride bike and more then one have had accidents cause someone didnt see them and changed lanes. Not one of the guys with lard Harleys have had this prob because people know that sound and know to be more cautious. Just because most of you are observent and notice bikes and stuff there are 10 times more dumba55es out there that dont pay attention and just move over.

honestly i love the sounds of harleys. i ride a zx6r ninja with its high performance i-4. somtimes i wish that i can modify my car to make it sound like my bike, but i got to give it up to those v-twins. the rumble sounds great when cruising. my next bike i'm probably going to buy will be a v twin sports bike. got a question for most of you guys! Who here likes DUCATI sport bikes??

"loud pipes save lives"...so theoretically, our exhausts would just help people by testing their response to loud exhausts (ie. motorcyles)...?
And why wouldn't they put loud exhausts on faster, sportier bikes? They can usually be seen driving much faster than Harley's. Wouldn't they need to be heard even more? Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the sound of a Harley (my dad has one) but I think it's partially an excuse to be loud and showoff.

u can find harlys that can be as fast as sport bikes! stock cruisers can be around 13s but a modded harly like a v-rod will rip ***! sport bikes can be LOUD as hell too but no one here complains because its such a sweet sound like a f1 or somthing.

they wouldn't have to be loud if they were following the simple rules of the road. 3 CAR lengths, use propper signalling, stay between the lines, and space cushioning (don't line up with vehicles in lanes next to you). But when you get all retardedly close to the car in front of you or start drifting towards the dotted lines, then you're asking to get hit.

any vehicle will have blind spots. It doesn't matter if you're driving an suv or a moto, if you're in someone's blind spot you might cause an accident
