bought from ebay, out of state:what should i do? HELP ASAP PLZ...
hi guys!
im helping my friend right now..
he just won a bid for a used car from ebay..
now..
we're in NY...the car's from NJ..
the thing is, we wanna avoid shipping cost by coming to NJ to pick up the car..
now, what should we do? how do we drive the car back to NY with the previous owner's plate and registration?
what should we bring to NJ? (forms from DMV NY?)
do we need to make the NY plate now without the car? if that's the case....do we need to wait for the seller to send the DMV NJ's forms and that title to do so?
please guys, i need ur help....
cos we wanna get the car ASAP...
can you help with with a "step by step" of what should we do?
thanx! any comments appreciated!

1. Go pick it up in NJ, and make sure that everything is as decribed because you don't want to get something with hidden problem. (Test drive and fully inspection from any shop would help). Complete the pink slip (forgot if it's pink...) for title transfering. Then you are done with the NJ part
2. Come back to NY, go to your local DMV, turn in the title transfer paperwork, and pay for tax. Be sure not to make any mistake on the paperwork because DMV will not accept it if there is a white out on it.
3. Since your car is not registered in NY. There is a registration fee that you would have to pay in order to transfer the registration from NJ to NY. In California it's something like 2% of the total amount plus a certain amount. (The fees varies and plus I asked this like 2 years ago so you will have to ask)
4. You are ready to enjoy your new ride! Get insurance by the way~
If the seller is a dealership instead of private party, you can ask them to help you out with further details. Hope the info helps!

you can do it through AAA, in CA the lines are horrible at dmv. don't know about where you are, but my dad saved a lot of time transferring a car to someone else through triple A.
guys!
thank you very much for the infos..
i'll re-check all the informations that i need on NY DMV again today...
i though that i need to bring the forms from NY and have the seller to sign it at NJ...
so, most probably, all i need is the "Title Transfer Form" of NJ DMV completed by the seller....and then of coarse the title, completed on the back....
and then we can head back home, right?
thanx guys!

grab a plate from another car you have...and DONT get pulled over!
or get a temp from NY
It doesnt matter what state the car is FROM, you live in NY, you will need a NY plate. end of story...my bf has bought cars used from, MASS, NY, NJ...the list goes on and on...my car had NY plates on it and all I had to do was go to the DMV and get CT plates...very simple.

hmmmmm..
icicicic...
the thing is, this is the first car for him...so he got no plates at all....and of coarse, i don't want to lend my plate to him, hahahah....i don't want my civic's plate convicted by the police, hahahhaa..
anyway, the car's from Bellevile, NJ...anybody knows that place?
he bought a 177000 miles BMW 318i 4dr...
i dunno man, it's a german car.....the seller said that it's really2 good...and if my friend doesn't like it, he will return the money, that's what he said...
basically, in the sense that you guys told me, there's no way that seller gonna let us to drive home with his plate, right?
i know, of coarse....(i just sell my old car) that we need to surrender the plate in order to cancel the insurance....
any other help? thanx guys!

Any plate mounted on a vehicle that is not applied to that vehicle is a crime. I wouldn't just slap any ole plate on the car. Do it the right way and you'll be fine.. Get the title and all the paperwork taken care of, you do need specific paperwork, get a temp tag and drive it back to NY.
