Salvage/rebuilt title questions
I'm looking at a 2001 Civic EX with 23000 miles and all the goodies for $8000.
I asked the dealer the extent of damage done to the car, and he told me that a fender, hood, and headlight were replaced. He said that everything under the hood was original, along with all the other panels.
Upon checking the CarFax report on this vehicle (1HGEM21901L051504), I found out that the vehicle was issued a Salvage title by the Illinois DMV, and subsequently a Rebuilt title from the same DMV.
My question to you is this: To be issued a Salvage title, doesn't a car need to be damaged by over half its fair-market value? It doesn't seem to me that a new hood, fender, and headlight would be that expensive; I'm wondering if the car required other work like, I dunno, frame straightening or something.
Any ideas?

i got my car with a salvaged title. only $4200. runs and looks like a brand new one. i saved money on fixing it too, all i paid was parts. my dad and grandpa, who's been fixing cars for 40 years fixed it.. as long as it was fixed correctly, it'll be good as new.
My buddy buys wrecks and rebuilds them for a living. Some are good some are bad. I've seen SUV's with dents in the bumper and tailgate get totalled. I've seen worse than that too. It all depends on the guy your buying it from some are honest some are not. Also depends on who fixed it and how well. I've driven most of the cars on his lot and 90% run and drive brand new.

I'm pretty sure this goes for all states, but i know that in ohio it's illegal. How this dealership can pawn a salvage car off on the lot confuses me. They wholesale salvage cars to auctions...........
Ask him about that.
