Anyone Ever Write to an Auto Journalist....I did...Got reply
I think you're probably right on that one...I never cared enough to really study the probe but I do know that the 4 bangers had the FS20DE engine in them. I think the Probe may be similar to the Mazda 6 in that the 6 cylinder versions do utilize Ford designs.
The chassis, suspension, etc on the Probe was all Mazda though. I swear that thing is an ugly car though.

okay here we go...a little internet search always helps. The V6 in the probe is from the Mazda 626. I'm not too educated on that engine, but I think Mazda took alot of things from the Ford parts bin on those engines...

The 626 was basiclly a contour. Same frame and engine.
I owned 2 Contours and they are NOT built on the Mazda 626 platform The wheel base is different - Contour 106.5" and the 626 at 105.1" - utilizing the same platform usually results in the same wheelbase. The 626 has 7 more cubic feet of interior space as well.
The Contour/Mystique did not appear until 1995 and the 626 had been around for some time by then.
To my knowledge the V6 probes had the same engine as the Mazda MX-6 V6
The 1st gen V6 Probes did use the Ford Vulcan V6 as mentioned above. The 2nd gen utilized a Mazda design V6.

So what's the problem? Manufacturers have been sharing platforms/engines for a long time... It's no secret. The cost eventually gets down to the consumer.
The RSX is essentially a heavily modified Civic chasis, and everything else that Honda makes can trace it's platform to the Accord or Civic. So I can't complain because it's a good solid foundation.
Now, about Fords. In the Philippines, the lowest model was actually a rebadged Protege. Those were good, I liked them. The ones here in the states aren't that great. I know my expericence with Ford cars is fairly limited, but I really didn't like the impressions that I got in several Foci. Which is why I'm glad they'll be using other platforms (Mazda's...).
