I think the Miata with a hardtop is a great choice if you can deal with the size of it (i'm talking about no back seat and a tiny trunk.)

I recomend a 00si,98-00 integra R (can buy them off ebay),98 240sx than put an Sr20DET and mod the hell out of it. Get a skyline front and rear tailight conversion! .
lastly I recomend the civic.... its better than a focas or corrola
however I grown quiet fond of my vic.. they handle superb and we have a turbo kit for them that puts us into the 13's! which is impressive as hell.
Or hey get an RSX type S cant afford that get a reg RSX turbo it and get 260hp!
there is alot of options, any car can be made fast for the money. Personally for a first time car a small coupe go with a civic, despite everyones ohh its slow claims!!! its reliable and can be made fast!

Mostly you'll find the teg type R's sell for no less than 16K. It's rare, but if you look long and hard, you'll find at least one for less than 12K. There was this guy on another forum who was selling his Type R for 8K. At that price, it's a steal.
