Ten smart vehicles for teens
You got a LX coupe for 16k? I got my 02 EX for that price in 2002 in Texas with a 8.25% sales tax.
And for parents that want to buy their teens new cars, whether they're 16 or graduating or going off to college, I think those are all nice choices, Volvo and Lexus included. Some kids have parents with money. What you may think is expensive as a Civic driver is not expensive to someone whose parents both drive S class MB's.

I don't mind lil kids with nice cars AS LONG AS THEY APPRECIATE THEM. I despise an ungrateful brat in a Civic as much as an ungrateful brat in a Benz. As long as they don't take it for granted, abuse it, etc...doesn't bother me.

Surprising that neither the cavalier or the focus showed up onthat list. Or is it...?
The IS300 confuses me. I like the stance and the back end is sweet, but the front end is so uninteresting it almost spoils the look of the car.

If you look at the picture, you notice that the Imprezza wagon is a WRX. I don't think that an turbo AWD vehicle would be safe for a first car...

you dont drive???
I think in this case, the picture isn't supposed to represent the car they meant to use. They probably mean the ~17k 2.5TS wagon...
What gets me is the Mini. That thing is pretty sturdy in high speed crashes, but its bumpers suck at 5mph testing. Also, 6mos ago when some friends were pricing out the Mini up here in the NW, there was a month wait to get a test drive, and the cars were selling for over MSRP.
Of course its the west coast phenomenon -- heck, even Civics have a markup here ...
Its why I will most likely never buy a new vehicle from a dealer in the NW... too greedy.

My 2¢:
If the highschools had mandatory drivers education in every state, we'd have a lot less stupid drivers on the road. And I'm talking about a true education, not just throwing them in a car and driving in the parking lot. They should teach them how to drive safely, how NOT to drive, how to drive in bad weather, and how to panic stop. They should also teach how the frikken car actually WORKS, so that everyone understands what's going on under the hood. Everybody should be able to change their oil, flush the radiator, change a flat, troubleshoot a burnt fuse, change a bulb, and a few other things that uneducated drivers pay others to do for them. It's amazing how many people don't know where to put the jack under the car to change a tire and end up damaging the car. I still see people asking the proper technique in panic stopping with or without ABS brakes. They should learn these things BEFORE they get their license.
I see a lot of stupid drivers all the time, and it makes me wonder if we'd have less traffic accidents if drivers ed was required. With all the lottery money that some states have, you'd think some of it would go toward drivers ed.

I see a lot of stupid drivers as well, and while I agree that Driver's Ed would help more, I have this counterpoint...
a lot of the stupid driver's I see aren't young people. I've seen women in their 30s driving an SUV at 70mph in the rain (the speedlimit in Oregon is only 65 and thats rural, its 55 through the metro areas) without the headlights on.
I mean I have nothing against speed, but I do feel there is a time and place for everything. It baffles me that people here drive with their lights off in the rain (and it rains here like half the year). I mean they don't realize that the lights aren't just for them to see, but also to be seen. Of course, I've seen this one car that I am still wondering how it passes the state inspection, or how it can be allowed to drive on the roads....
Its a mid 80s Ford Escort, missing its Front headlights, turn signals, bumper, and grille. And I've seen this car for atleast the last year... Its not like one of those tickets you could argue. I mean if a cop saw your vehicle with no headlights or signals and gave you a ticket, you'd have to get it FIXED before you could fight it.
I wonder what the cops are doing? KrispyKreme, perhaps?

MMILX,
I don't see your comments as a counterpoint at all. That 30-something girl you mentioned probably didn't have a drivers ed course in high school. I'm a 30-something myself and I didn't have it. If I weren't such a car nut and read constantly about cars, I'd probably be a stupid driver too.
The point is education. Many people were never told that they should have their lights on in the rain. They don't know that you shouldn't pump ABS brakes, suv's are easy to roll, using a blinker avoids accidents, and countless others. You'd be surprised at how many people, men and women, that can't drive a straight-shift car. In today's age of education and access to information, nobody should be ignorant about how their car should be operated.

First off, let me say this: Nothing surprises me anymore.
I'll fully agree with you on the lack of education. Heck, it used to be in Texas that you needed to have a driving test along with the written. Then for a while (might not be anymore) it became a situation where you just needed to take the written test. WHOA!
I actually had driver's ed when I was 15, got my learner's permit and drove for a full year with my parents before getting my license. I'll admit that I did some stupid things when I was 18-23, in spite of the education... call it what you will. Who knows what I'd have done if I hadn't been educated in driving!
I dunno, I feel that I've come a long way since those days (I am 29 now). But I've also had quite a variety of cars over the last 6 years, and grown up in a lot of ways.
The stupid drivers that I see on the roads have no real idea of whats at stake. Maybe they've not had the chance to see the reality of what a stupid decision can do. I had a friend die in a one car accident because he was doing something stupid.
I've also owned a couple of cars that made me realize just how easily I could die if I did something stupid. Once you've got to that point, its amazing how much you change...
One other thing I've noticed is that its interesting how some teenagers become ULTRA responsible when they get a nice car from mommy and daddy, while others totally blow it off. Back in high school, this junior got an 86 Vette (6 year old car at the time). In his junior year, he managed to have 3 accidents in the car... minor ones, but still accidents. This other guy I knew got a 76 Plymouth Volare wagon that his grandparents owned... the car was in great shape and at the end of the year it looked better than the Vette...

Yes, I agree with the tests. I think they should be for new and old drivers. A mandatory retest should be given out every 15 or so years... Just to make sure people still know what to do.
A stupid driver was changing lanes without a signal light and without looking, and he almost hit me 3 days ago. I doubt that he learned through drivers ed.
