By the definition of fuel economy, I do not believe our VTEC has any advantage than a non-VTEC. Take a look at the 04 Civic brochure, and the LX actually has the same gas mileage as the EX.
Let's check the part # of HX and EX, the camshaft has a different part number, and is more expensive for the EX. If they are the same engine, then everything is supposed to be the same.
IMO, the HX should replace the LX. It should have the same amount of options that the LX has now. I would also offer the HX in the sedan bodystyle, where it would probably do more good than the coupe. I would assume that sedan buyers with families would want the higher mileage engine moreso than a coupe buyer.

OK now, what I see is this from Honda's model library:
2001 Civic Coupe
Specs & Features
1.7-liter, 16-valve, 115-hp Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV)-rated engine (DX, LX)
1.7-liter, 16-valve, SOHC VTEC®-E engine (117-hp, HX; 127-hp, EX)
Dual front airbags (SRS)
Power windows, mirrors and door locks (Except DX)
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) (EX)
Standard air conditioning (EX, Si)
And that's all the VTEC-E I have seem relating to Civic EX. 2002 model doesn't even say about VTEC-E, just SOHC VTEC. So no idea on what's going on.

More VTEC-E info:
I've also found the review article from Car and Driver back in November 2000, when they first reviewed the 2001 civic. Strangely, they don't even mention the HX.
http://caranddriver.com/article.asp?...rticle_id=3267
"In DX and LX models, power increases from 106 to 115 horsepower, while torque increases from 103 pound-feet at 4600 rpm to 110 at 4500 rpm. In EX models (like the coupe you see here), which use Honda's VTEC-E engine, power remains unchanged at 127 horsepower at 6300 rpm, but the torque improves from 107 pound-feet at 5500 rpm to 114 at a more usable 4800 rpm."

Tip: An apostrophe never should be added to "its". Never use for possesive, common mistake.
Incorrect: "Ever since it's conception..."
Correct: "Ever since its conception..."
Incorrect: "Ever since it's conception..."
Correct: "Ever since its conception..."
^ I think it's a lady, dude. But Bellz, your word usage could use some help. :-p Sorry, this is coming from a very critical eye when it comes to proper English. But, nonetheless, great job... Why did you write this? Just for fun? I'd suggest adding some visual aids (pics)

A lady? I don't know what you mean by that. I think my word usage is fine, but thanks for your assistance. I wrote it to add content to my site and provide people like you with useful information.
I never claimed to be an English language master, so don't expect me to be perfect. I write more accurately than at least 90% of the people online, so just enjoy the article and don't worry about mistakes, ok?
