A friend of mine just bought a 2004 VW GTI VR6 2.8L and gave me the pleasure of taking it for a drive, man thats a fun car, it has a nice interior and can tear down the street.. kinda makes me wish I had $22,000 to blow on a car

I've been looking into these cars for the past couple of months. I am totally in love with them. I love the hatch look, and the power. Only drawback...it's a heavy car. If I do get one, I'm waiting for the R32...240hp, oh yea baby! And the car looks so beautiful. Supposedly, production for the state-side cars began last week. Now if they would just release the MSRP for it...I'd be set. They are guessing it should be under $30k.

Nice looking car, but I have a few issues with it.
1. weight : 3036lbs
2. weight Distribution (approx 63.4% Front 36.5% rear) thats seriously Nose heavy.
3. Primitive suspension : torsion beam rear axle...... which looks something like this
(This one is out of a Gulf, but you get the idea).
none of this lends its self well to being a good autocross/track chassis, but then there are worse cars. Weight seems to becoming an issue with compact imports nowadays, Sure cars are getting more HP, but weights are going up. So it seems that imports are being designed more and more with straight lines (Accleration and Top speed) in mind rather then the twisties....... Go figure.

^^^^ Couldn't have said it better. Not only that, why would you spend 30K on a compact econo car? Yes it has power, what did he say it was? 240 ponies? But how fast and smooth is power delivery compared to other cars in the same price range? S2000? 240 ponies, better track car, RWD, that's an amazing car in the same range. 350Z, RX-8, jeez we could go on forever, but case in point is that I would never spend 30K on a Golf. Ever.

The thing at eats at me about ever getting a GTI is what I could do with my civic if I put 15 grand into it. If you bought a civic for 15k and put 15k imagine how awesome it would be. If you're going to buy a compact anyway, why not go that route?
Great looking car though. Love them all tinted out and lowered...

I work at Walker Volkswagen & Acura in New Orleans. I can answer the question about the weight of the R32. It's a European car. German Engeering. Volkswagen and many other european car companies use 12 gauge steel on their cars compare to most American and Japenese cars that have 16 gauge steel. It's more durable and stiff. Safe and any other way you can see it. True, it's freaking heavy for a hatchback. But the engine are so much powerful,3.2L VR6 six speed in the R32.European concept, heavy cars that stick to the road with powerful engines. EX. BMW's are heavy but can let out some power. I love Japenese cars, but falling in love with the European cars too. Both sides of engeering.
Quality on VWs has gone down the drain, they've been getting some bad ratings for the last few years quality-wise. Also, I used to own a Golf and the damn thing was always in the shop despite the fact that it was a '97 (I owned it back in 2k1).
volkswagon/acura? thats a weird combination. i work at volkswagon/porsche and theres a volkswagon/audi dealership on the southside and there's an obvious connection between those but acura? total different end of the spectrum. as for the R32, ive heard were not getting them(at least not in Canada). the top o' the line right now for us is the gti 30th aniversary edition.

Well, yeah. . . I was just making the comment because the power to weight ratio of the car could have been notably better than this.
With 300 HP, AWD, and a curb weight of around 3260 lbs, my car will run circles around that thing. Sure it's a few thousand more, but I would have thought Volkswagon would have tried to up the ante a little on Subaru and Mitsubishi with the introduction of this car.

The issue i have with the weight deals more with handlig rather then acceleration. Weight affects handling differently then it affects acceleration.
in the weight Vs accleeration contest, the weight can be countered by adding more horsepower.
In the Weight Vs Handling contest, the weight can only be countered by either having that weight as close to the ground as possible, or by having Wide tires. and you can only put so wide of a tire on a GTi.

Volkswagen is doing little (or should I say no?) advertising of this car in the US. They didn't even bring it to Sema. They only had the new Pheaton there. If they wanted people to know about this car, don't you think they should be promoting it? It's going to be a rare thing. No one even knows how many there will be. Rumors had it at 1,000....5,000....no one can even guess yet. VW is not tying to compete with the STi or the Evo. They are both turbo'd cars. This car is not. It's more of a comparison with say a G35 or a TSX. If I had 30k to spend, I'd have my name on the waiting list already.

I see. . . . so sub-3.0 liter displacement, AWD, and just-under-$30,000 price tag?
Indeed. . . . they're not at all trying to compete with Mitsubishi and Subaru.

VW's are definetly heavy, and it's because that's the way they are built across that ocean. I had a 94 Jetta a year and a half ago and it would out-handle and out accelerate my civic both bone stock. And this is a Jetta with 150,000 miles on it vs a civic with 15,000 miles on it! Oh and less I forget to mention that the Jetta was missing a rear under-brace that got ripped off when it was wrecked.
