If you compare the price of a skyline in Japan to cars here in America, you are pitting it agains v6 mustangs, cameros, etc. The skyline is not a super expensive car...... go look up the prices..... a 98 gtr will run you around $25k in perfect condition (edit: if you live in Japan).
It is idolized because of its modability, not because of how it does stock. Stock they will definately stay with the pack in their pricerange. Yes it would cost $80,000 to import one, but that doesn't mean it's an $80,000 car! When it comes to modding , though, they own any car I can think of. It's not idolized for it's stock performance and I don't think too many would rave about it stock. Modded, however, it'll slaughter just about anything. 1000ish hp with great handling is nothing to shake a broomstick at.
I understand where sadboy's comming from, though. Getting one into the US is expensive and modding is expensive in the US too..... gotta import the frickin parts too. Twin turbo makes upgrading them expensive and you gotta bore the engine and upgrade hella internals to get that ungodly 1000ish figure (doesn't exactly make it a daily driver).
In the US a more practical daily drive would be a vette due to importing and modding costs (it'd ride a LOT smoother than a modded up skyline :P). The skyline is a favorite because it's the ultimate modder's car and a rarity, Japanese muscle. A last point: cars don't get hyped for no reason if they've been on the street for a while (pre-production is another story).

yeah, you can import one, but you won't be able to drive it on the street or register it. The expensive part is bringing it up to safety standards for the US. MotorEx ranges in the $80s, O-Mega Imports, not so sure as they are not listing prices after standards are met. I am guessing right around the same range.

I don't mind if you like domestics. But don't criticize cars that you don't know much about.

I also have vids of R34 GTR-R's running high 12's easy. The GT-R is not exactly a "handling machine" either. It has a really high curb weight. I'm wondering if the ppl on this thread understands that the GT-R 4WD is not the same as other 4WD cars. But no one can really deny the GT-R is a great car. But as mentioned before, probably the rarity hype. Like how everyone wanted the Euro engine E36 (I think) M3 and now we have it and the hype kind of went down.
