Question Define Rice

This subject has been aggravating me for quite some time now. What is rice? I hear many, certainly not all, of the members on this site say, “Man that is so rice!” or “Lose the wing!” or my favorite hypocritical comment, “Lose the graphics!” Hypocritical because most, if not all, of us enjoyed the movie(s) The Fast and Furious and/or 2Fast 2Furious, which if proper attention is given to the auto’s in the movie, one will notice the abundant use of graphics on the cars...yet most, if not all, seemed to take a liking to the cars used.

I don’t mean to slam or discredit ANY of the members on this site. My ultimate goal is knowledge. Knowledge pertaining to the majority opinion of the members. Define for me, if you will, “RICE.”

You may be asking yourself “Why is he asking such a specific and abstract question pertaining to such a general term?” The answer is simple. I am a philosophical kind of guy, with a wandering mind. Basically I want to know if I’m normal or not. My goal is to achieve the understanding of the term “RICE” and also to prove my theory. The aforementioned theory is that “RICE,” is a relative term, and not a general description, as applied to posts all too often. Relative to geography. Relative to cultural differences. Relative to personal taste. Relative, and this is HUGE, to group influence. Relative to changing trends in the auto industry, as dictated by power holders, i.e. magazine’s, auto manufacturers, and media in general. Relative to performance fact.

Allow me to elaborate. I like this car: CIVIC

I like the altezza’s. I like the wing. I like the graphics.

Those opinions are based upon several different factors. One being geographical location. Those living on the west coast and east coast, as apparent from your posts, dislike the altezza’s simply because they are either “played out,” or you just don’t care for them. (The last reason should ALWAYS be a given, copout, reason applied to all further mention of opinion) In my area, Colorado, altezza’s are not so common and thus not played out, therefore appealing to me. Some would suggest that the graphics are just too much for the car. I think this is based upon public opinion/group influence as well as changing trends. Others would argue the point, the wing is overtly presumptuous. This opinion may be due to one or more of the following. The wing is simply not essential, due to the fact that there is just not enough horse power, creating speed, warranting the need for the down force, the wing creates, aside from the fact that we have front wheel drive cars, and the wing creates down force in the rear. Still others may argue that the wing is just too big and gaughty to be tastefully placed on such a small car. Understand where I am going with this...good.

Keep in mind the aforementioned opinions, descriptions of opinions and related reasons are STRICTLY SPECULATION, and as having read said information, should be regarded as STRICTLY SPECULATION.

Moving on. I would like for you all to post a reply to this thread containing a DETAILED description/explanation of the term “RICE,” and it’s applicability (Not sure if that's a word, but if our president can make up words, so can I). Keep in mind that the more you elaborate and use examples, the more precise your definition will become. That is my goal, precision. I am not sure if that goal is achievable or realistic, but let’s all give it a valiant effort. I challenge you ALL to prove me wrong. Prove that the term rice can be applied, with all confidence, to a car, if the definition as we apply it is similar to a term such as fast or slow. ...but wait, that is a relative opinion as well...that’s another thread for another time.

yes rice is based primarily on opinion. what one person might consider a "cool" thing to do, many others would consider it common. it's that whole majority minority rules kind of thing. what you see i that civic is your own liking but there will be others who hate it so much they run off a cliff. all in all, a mojority opinion/definition or rice categorizes several aspects of the car no just graphics.

1. If a vehicle has graphics that seems too flamboyant(spelling).
2. if you have wing. They are built for speed, not a daily commute. a functional car would have a wing if they raced every day going a minimum 120 mph that also includes wangan runs , then the wing is functional. otherwise its dead weight.

3. now about the altezzas. they only belong on a altezza not no civic, no rsx, not even a ferrari. just altezzas.

im with the "keep it nice and clean group" because cops will never look at you funny if you didnt have any kind of bs that might make them think you got something under the hood. which i do

thants all that i think of rice, and is my opnion

i define rice as stuff people put it on their car, and claim it makes it better, or faster. like the wing. i think that is rice. because, like you said, it's dead weight. it's pointless. and most people have them because they think they are cool, not because they race or anything. and i do not think altezza's are rice whatsoever. if someone does not like altezza's, that does not make them rice. i dont like body kits, but im not gonna say body kits are rice (and it wouldnt fly with anyone anyway, because NO ONE has started saying that yet) so another point to my speech is once a group of people start saying something is rice, most of the civic community has to agree. i think someone's car is their own work and fun. i dont understand how people who dont like kits, wings, graphics, euros, etc etc etc can tell someone that they are stupid and all that. dude, if you like that car, fine. i dont like it. i think it is tacky. but thats my opinion. im not gonna tell the guy he is a loser because he has all that stuff on his car. it's his money, his car, his fun.

that civic is riced...plain and simple. how do i say this? easy...the mods to the exterior of the car are more than the mods to the engine. rice is mainly an opinion...if i saw that car and the engine was built to hell and back, i'd say "its kindy ricey, but fast as hell"..but all he has is a SRI, and exhaust (if i rememered correctly). then he has a laundry list of mods to the ext. of his car just for looks... the R33 kit, the graphics, the spoiler, the dual exhaust (on a 4-cyl. i might add, which actually decreases performance from what i understand)...the list goes on. this car is rice.
rice is also largely an attitude people have...attitude about what mods do what, what looks good, and how fast they THINK they are. if someone buys a civic and thinks its fast, then throws some ricey mods on the ext. of it, it is rice b.c they think its fast...its a civic for cryin out loud...its not fast, not stock at least. people who dont know anything about cars or modding or performance who stuff to their cars are most likely driving rice. its a very difficult thing to explain.

basically, its a case by case basis for me. ive seen some HORRIBLY RICEY things drivin around cincinnati, but then found out that they drive a CX hatch with an H22 in it....or have a B18C turbo'ed, or whatever...then i look past the chrome rims and the windshield wiper sprayer lights and say "wow, fast car". i can type all day about this, but dont really feel like it, b.c like others said, this topic has been played on this board.
